Job Description

Job Overview: Nursing Graduate (NG)

This role is for a Nursing Graduate (NG) who will practice under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). The NG will utilize the initials “NG” after their name as credentials.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct Supervision: Practice strictly under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse who is physically present on the unit.
  • Cosigning: The supervising RN will cosign medication transcription, medication administration, and all nursing documentation.
  • Continuous Observation & Support: The supervising RN will continually observe, assist, coordinate, evaluate, and monitor the nursing graduate.
  • Medication Transcription: Transcribe medication orders following written policies and procedures, once skill validation is successfully completed.
  • Medication Administration: Administer medications and controlled substances, including signing controlled substances sheets.
  • Documentation: Document in the medical record using the abbreviation “NG”.
  • Patient Assessments: Perform patient assessments only after the initial assessment or the first assessment of the shift has been completed by a Registered Nurse.
  • Routine Procedures: Perform and document routine procedures learned within a generic nursing program, including:
    • Placing nasal gastric tubes.
    • Performing urinary catheterizations.
    • Applying sterile dressings.
    • Performing blood sugar checks.
    • Obtaining specimens.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited registered nursing program.
  • NCLEX Eligibility: Eligible to sit for the NCLEX examination.
  • NCLEX Requirements:
    • Must cease practice as an NG immediately if two attempts at the NCLEX exam are failed.
    • Must successfully take and pass the NCLEX exam within 120 days of application to the board of nursing.
    • Must cease practice as an NG no later than 120 days after the date the nursing graduate submitted an application to the Board.

Prohibited Activities for a Nursing Graduate (NG):

  • Working without the physical presence of and direct supervision by a Registered Nurse.
  • Referring to oneself or practicing as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
  • Being considered a staff person for purposes of a staffing pattern.
  • Accepting charge responsibilities.
  • Performing initial patient assessment or the first patient assessment of a shift.
  • Developing patient plans of care.
  • Evaluating or documenting patient discharge.
  • Independently administering medications or intravenous therapy.

Pay Range:

$25—$30 USD
