Job Description
This posting describes a position for New Graduate Registered Nurses (RNs), referred to as Nurse Extern/Resident, specifically designed to support their transition into practice.
Role Summary:
The Nurse Extern/Resident works under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. The primary function of this role is to provide patient care and perform general duties within the organization. This involves delivering patient care by utilizing the nursing process, which includes data collection and assessment, identifying and prioritizing patient problems/needs, and evaluating the outcomes of nursing care. The role also requires coordinating, providing, and directing patient teaching activities, and coordinating care with other health team members.
Key Responsibilities:
• Conducts initial and ongoing patient assessments in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team.
• Analyzes assessment data to create a comprehensive plan of care.
• Implements treatment plans and evaluates their effectiveness.
• Administers medications safely, adhering to the State of Ohio Nursing Practice Act and Mercy Health policies and procedures.
• Serves as a central point of contact for patients regarding care coordination across various hospital departments.
Grow Strong RN Program for New Grads:
New graduates joining Bon Secours Mercy Health will participate in the Grow Strong RN program. This is a 6-month experience specifically designed to guide new-to-practice nurses through their critical first year. It aims to bridge the gap between nursing school and real-life practice by providing an extensive training program that includes a comprehensive introduction to nursing practice and assistance in building essential skills and knowledge. The program emphasizes support from clinical colleagues, preceptors, and mentors dedicated to fostering the new nurse’s full potential.
Sign-on Bonus:
A $2,500 sign-on bonus is offered to eligible candidates, contingent upon a 2-year commitment to the organization.
Education/Experience Requirements:
• Recent graduate of an approved nursing program.
• Required to obtain RN License within 90 days of employment. If the license is not obtained within this period due to board failure, an extension of 60 days from the fail date is granted. Failure to obtain the license within this extended period will result in immediate removal from the position.
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification through the American Heart Association is required.
• If the student graduated from an ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing) or a Diploma program, they are required to obtain their BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) within 5 years of employment.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
• Proper grammar.
• Legible handwriting.
Working Conditions:
The work environment can be demanding, characterized by:
• Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads.
• Generally a general office environment at a desk in a well-lighted, air-conditioned area with moderate noise levels.
• Potential exposure to limited hazardous substances or body fluids.
• Potential exposure to infectious organisms.
• Periods of constant interruptions may occur.
• Prolonged periods of working alone may occur.
Additional Job Requirements:
Upon obtaining their RN licensure, the Nurse Extern/Resident will be required to continue working on the specific unit/department to which they were initially hired as a Nurse Extern/Resident.
