Job Title: Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) Intern
About the Role
This is a valuable and unique career opportunity for qualified Registered Nurses (RNs) who have recently graduated from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with a Neonatal Specialty. The program is designed to extend your NNP education in an intern position, preparing you for your new role as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner.
As an NNP Intern, you will perform responsibilities under the direct supervision of a licensed Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, gaining comprehensive experience and knowledge across various critical neonatal care settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate the care of acutely ill neonates in both intensive care and acute care unit settings.
- Present pertinent patient data to the medical staff effectively.
- Collect and accurately interpret reports from diagnostic lab tests, radiographic procedures, and clinical studies.
- Confer with attending physicians and communicate with other care providers/consultants to ensure coordinated clinical care.
- Streamline the patient transfer process between different levels of care.
- Attend high-risk deliveries and actively assist with neonatal resuscitation activities.
- Once credentialed and privileged as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, you will perform procedures and manage order entry.

This internship spans across critical care units within Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital (VVWH) and C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital:
- VVWH 9 East and 9 West Birthing Center
- Brandon NICU on 8 West
- Expansion Unit (10 West)

Hourly Wage for Registered Nurses:
- $40.18 – $62.31 per hour
Shift Differentials:
- Evening Shift Differential: $3.00 / hour
- Night Shift Differential: $4.00 / hour
- Day Shift Weekend Differential: $2.90 / hour
- Evening Shift Weekend Differential: $5.90 / hour
- Night Shift Weekend Differential: $6.90 / hour
- Charge Nurse Differential: $1.00 / hour

Expectations & Commitment
This Neonatal Nurse Practitioner internship requires a two-year commitment following the completion of orientation. The selected candidate will practice as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner for 2 years in the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit, with no less than a 0.9-1.0 FTE appointment fraction.
Work Schedule
- Hours: 40 per week
- Shift: Day shift, including weekend shifts as required by the service.
- Primary Location: C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit.
- Floating: All new employees are expected to float to designated unit(s) during times of low census, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must meet or have met all required qualifications prior to the start date of employment:
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with a Neonatal Specialty.
- A complete and accurate resume is required for full consideration.
Desired Qualifications
The ideal candidate will also possess:
- Demonstrated excellent verbal communication skills.
- Ability to function effectively under the direct supervision of a licensed NNP while ensuring smooth and collaborative functioning of the medical care team.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate clinical care ideas across multiple patient care services and to communicate effectively as a patient advocate.
- Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of current medical, surgical, and pharmaceutical treatment modalities for acute and chronically ill neonates.

- Nursing Framework Level: This UMPNC RN posting is listed as Nursing Framework LEVEL C. The actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at the time of hire (levels range from A to F).
- Union Affiliation: This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M, the Michigan Nurses Association, and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union.
