NEA Media Intern Position Description

The NEA Internship Program provides interns with valuable training, learning opportunities, and professional experience to support their career development in the field of education. The NEA Media Intern position within the Center for Communications, Media Strategy department offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the strategic goals of NEA.

Position Emphasis:

This internship supports NEA’s core objective to empower its members to advocate for quality public education. Interns will play a vital role in promoting public education through various media initiatives and communications strategies.

Media Intern Assignments:

Draft media materials: Contribute to the development of press releases, media advisories, and other materials for distribution to journalists and the public.
Pitch reporters: Identify appropriate media outlets for NEA stories and pitch story ideas to journalists.
Staff media interviews: Assist in coordinating media interviews for NEA staff and leaders.
Conduct open source research: Research media channels and develop a deep understanding of the media landscape relevant to NEA’s work.
Maintain reporter database: Manage a database of relevant journalists and media contacts.
Monitor social media channels: Monitor social media platforms for relevant news and trends impacting NEA’s efforts.
Draft and distribute tweets for @NEAMedia: Create and post engaging content for NEA’s official Twitter account.
Cut and edit broadcast media clips: Edit and prepare video clips for internal and external use.
Prepare PowerPoint decks for various trainings: Develop presentations to support NEA’s internal training programs.

Additional Intern Activities:

Beyond core responsibilities, interns will have the opportunity to:

Collaborate with NEA staff: Work alongside experienced communications professionals.
Participate in learning experiences: Engage in a variety of projects and initiatives that enhance their skills and knowledge.
Attend NEA events: Observe NEA events such as Representative Assembly events, Board meetings, and policy forums.
Network with stakeholders: Connect with NEA leadership and staff, as well as with other interns.

Organization skills: Manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
