Mining Engineer Internship at Cargill

This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience in the mining industry while working alongside experienced professionals at Cargill’s underground salt mine locations in either Lansing, NY or Cleveland, OH. You will be part of the Cargill Protein and Salt (CPS) business unit and will have the chance to learn, grow, and contribute to a crucial industry.

This internship can lead to a variety of full-time engineering roles within Cargill, including:

Mining Engineers: Work underground with engineers and crews on active projects, supporting infrastructure, and ensuring safe mining practices. Responsibilities include:
• Surveying and mapping
• Room and pillar mining operations
• Mineral processing
• Water management
• Materials handling
• Mining safety best practices
Electrical Engineers: Gain experience in high-voltage power infrastructure, automation systems, and electrical reliability in a challenging environment. Responsibilities include:
• Operating and automating mining equipment
• Maintaining hoisting systems, pumps, conveyor belts, and other systems
• Developing and implementing best practices for electrical design and maintenance
Production Management Engineers: Lead people, processes, and production activities. Responsibilities include:

# Internship Details

Duration: 12 weeks, typically during the summer months (May/June – August).
Location: Lansing, NY or Cleveland, OH (relocation assistance may be available for qualifying interns).
Compensation: $25.00 – $34.70 per hour (based on graduation date and eligibility for full-time employment).

# Eligibility Requirements

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mining Engineering (MinE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical Engineering (EE), Industrial Engineering (IE), or a related engineering field.
• Graduation date between December 2025 and May 2028.
• Authorized to work in the U.S.
• Ability to relocate to Cleveland, OH or Lansing, NY for the internship.
• Ability to complete a 12-week internship in Summer 2025 (May/June – August).
• Proven ability to work well with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
• High degree of initiative and resourcefulness.

# Preferred Qualifications

• Sophomore, junior, or senior status in an accredited engineering program.
• Previous mining or heavy industrial co-op or internship experience.
• Overall GPA of 2.7 or higher.
• Ability to apply technical knowledge to job-related duties.
• Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Leadership experience.
