Senior Underwriter, Middle Market | Liberty Mutual
The Tone:
This is a full-time individual contributor role at Liberty Mutual, requiring in-person presence within a specified geographic location for regular visits with local brokers and agents. Liberty Mutual provides commercial property & casualty insurance products and services. This role is crucial for evaluating and pricing commercial risks within the middle market segment, driving profitability, managing key relationships, and contributing to strategic portfolio development for your book of business.

• Mission: Underwrite commercial property & casualty risks in the middle market segment, making analytical, data-driven underwriting decisions.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Risk Assessment: Underwrite middle market commercial accounts within assigned authority by assessing submissions, reviewing coverage terms, exposures, loss history, financials, and supporting information to determine accept/decline, terms, and pricing.
• Strategic Decision-Making: Make independent, data-driven decisions on risk selection and pricing consistent with underwriting appetite and profitability objectives, coordinating referrals for accounts above individual authority.
• Market Relationship Management: Maintain and grow relationships with producing brokers and agents, acting as a visible Liberty Mutual representative in the market and developing targeted strategies to expand market share.
• Complex Account Evaluation: Underwrite higher-limit, complex, or unusual submissions typical to middle market clients, including specialty exposures, large single-location risks, multi-location schedules, or industry-specific hazards.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Engage internal partners such as Claims, Actuarial, Risk Control, and Legal to structure appropriate terms and risk mitigation plans, and mentor junior underwriters on middle market practices.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Degree in Business or equivalent, with a focus on commercial property & casualty underwriting.
• Experience: A minimum of 2.5 years, typically 3 or more years, of progressive underwriting experience and/or other related experience, with a proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business.
• Skills: Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks, competence with all phases and aspects of the underwriting process, proficiency in using qualitative and quantitative tools and techniques, and comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues.
• Bonus: CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred.
