Job Description: Medical Technologist (Req #: 242070)

This is an intermittent, per diem (on-call) evening shift position within the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at UW Medicine. The department provides clinical laboratory services for patient care, research, and educational programs, combining sophisticated testing and informatics with the resources of an academic institution. It serves labs and medical facilities nationally and internationally.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

The position encompasses a broad range of laboratory tasks, including but not limited to:

Testing: Performing routine and complex procedures on biological specimens; ensuring accuracy, promptness, and efficiency; adhering to lab policies and procedures; maintaining cost-effective supplies; utilizing computer systems (LIS, network); entering results; operating, calibrating, and maintaining equipment; following safety procedures; recognizing and correcting errors; documenting corrective actions; working independently and using independent judgment. Interpretation and confirmation of results, problem identification and resolution, and knowledge of expected values, disease states, and interfering substances are key aspects. Supervisory responsibilities may include checking and approving the work of other technologists, technicians, or lab assistants.

Quality Control: Utilizing quality control criteria; performing quality procedures (proficiency testing, temperature control, reagent control, calibrations, function verification tests); maintaining documentation for accreditation and licensure; assisting with preparation for inspections; assisting with quality control program establishment and monitoring; identifying and reporting questionable data.

Problem-solving & Troubleshooting: Remediating instrument and procedural problems; assisting colleagues with problem-solving; identifying problem causes, evaluating solutions, and implementing them (if assigned); recognizing and reporting uncorrectable problems.

Research & Development (if assigned): Developing new procedures; evaluating and modifying existing ones; collecting and analyzing data; performing statistical analysis.

Phlebotomy (if assigned): Performing phlebotomy and/or arterial punctures (requires current MA certification).

Training and Leadership (if assigned): Training new employees; assisting with student training; developing and evaluating teaching programs; directing the work of lab assistants and technicians; providing input on staff performance.

Required Position Qualifications:

Education: Baccalaureate degree in medical technology; or a baccalaureate degree in science plus completion of an accredited medical technology program; or (at the Lab Director’s discretion) an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience meeting State and Federal regulations.

Licensure/Certification: Current technologist-level certification (ASCP or equivalent); or meeting requirements as “testing personnel” under State of Washington and Federal regulations. MA certification is required for phlebotomy duties.
