Medical Assistant Certified Job Description

Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Medical Assistant Certified is a multi-skilled clinical professional who provides both indirect and direct patient care. This role operates within the defined scope of practice and adheres to high standards of excellence and quality. Under the direction of a healthcare provider, the Medical Assistant helps complete the patient’s chief complaint, which includes taking vital signs (respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature). They are also responsible for documenting patient/family needs, participating in patient care planning and implementation, and administering ordered medications (oral, injection, topical, etc.) according to medical assisting scope and state guidelines.

Essential Job Functions

The core responsibilities of a Medical Assistant Certified include:

Adherence to Legal Requirements: Understanding and following all legal responsibilities and requirements associated with the Medical Assistant role.
Patient Condition Monitoring: Identifying significant changes in a patient’s condition through data collection and promptly reporting them to the provider.
Problem Resolution: Troubleshooting issues and escalating problems to the provider, direct supervisor, or other appropriate internal resources when necessary.
Excellence in Care: Demonstrating high standards of care in all interactions with both internal and external customers.
Skill Maintenance: Maintaining clinical and administrative skills as per departmental competency guidelines to meet patient care and daily operational needs.
Patient Preparation: Escorting patients to examination rooms and preparing them for the physician.
Travel/Flexibility: Traveling to other facilities for providers or adjusting hours as directed by the practice manager to meet patient care needs.
Environment Maintenance: Keeping work areas, exam rooms, and equipment clean, orderly, and safe, ensuring supplies and equipment are available and properly functioning.
Virtual Health Support: Assisting patients and providers with virtual health visits, which involves setting up visits on platforms, pre-charting, contacting patients for preparedness, troubleshooting issues, and obtaining chief complaints, health maintenance checks, medication reviews, and other relevant details.
Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Management: Accurately and appropriately documenting information in the EMR.
In-Basket Management: Managing in-basket messages in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) strictly under the provider’s verbatim instructions.
Front Desk Workflows (Optional): Potentially performing front desk duties such as My Chart requests, patient registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out.
Follow-Up and Collections: Following up on orders, appointments, referrals, and follow-up visits, and collecting co-pays as needed.
Other Duties: This may include ordering supplies, tracking referrals, labs, and diagnostic tests, and disposing of contaminated supplies.

Licensing/Certification

Required Medical Assisting Certification: Active certification from one of the following:
• Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the American Association of Medical Assisting
• Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from American Medical Technologists
• Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
• Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) from the National Association for Health Professionals
• National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
Alternative Certification: If MA certification cannot be obtained, an Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) is acceptable (with the exception of South Carolina).
BLS Basic Life Support: Required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire and required prior to independent patient care at BSMH.

Education

Required: High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred (Most States): Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program.
Required (South Carolina): Completion of one of the following:
• An accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program.
• A Career and Technical Education Health Sciences program approved by the South Carolina Department of Education.
• A medical assisting program provided by a branch of the United States military.
• A Medical Assisting United States Department of Labor approved Registered Apprenticeship program.
• A training program delivered by a healthcare employer that aligns with a nationally accredited certification exam.

Work Experience

Preferred: Completion of an externship or clinical lab training.
Preferred: 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience.

Skills

Candidates should possess the following skills:

Clinical Documentation: Ability to record patients’ medical history, vital statistics, and test results in medical records.
Patient Assessment: Interview patients to obtain medical information and accurately measure vital signs, weight, and height.
Medication Administration: Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
Specimen Handling: Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log them, and prepare them for testing.
Prescription Management: Provide authorized prescription and drug refill information for pharmacies as directed by the provider.
Patient Education: Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians’ instructions to patients.
Sterilization: Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
Laboratory Procedures: Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
Office Administration: Perform general office duties, such as answering telephones, taking dictation, or completing insurance forms.
Assisting Physicians: Successfully complete skills or competency checklists to assist physicians in examining and treating patients, including tasks like handing instruments, giving injections, removing sutures, and changing wound dressings.
Communication: Strong oral and written communication skills.
Teamwork: Ability to collaboratively work with patients, families, and teams, especially in a high-volume environment.
Medical Knowledge: Proficiency in medical terminology.
Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and meticulousness.
Multitasking: Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Technical Proficiency: Ability to use standard office equipment (computer, copier, phone, fax machine).
