About the Job: Medical Assistant Certified
Location: Lima, OH
Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position:
The Medical Assistant Certified is a versatile clinical professional who provides both indirect and direct patient care within their scope of practice, adhering to high standards of excellence and quality. Under the guidance of a provider, the Medical Assistant plays a crucial role in addressing the patient’s chief complaint. This includes tasks such as taking vital signs (respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature), documenting patient and family needs, participating in the planning and implementation of patient care, and administering ordered medications (oral, injection, topically, etc.) in accordance with Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines.
Essential Job Functions:
• Legal Compliance: Understands and adheres to all legal responsibilities and requirements associated with the Medical Assistant role.
• Patient Monitoring & Reporting: Collects data to identify significant changes in a patient’s condition and promptly reports them to the provider.
• Troubleshooting & Escalation: Troubleshoots issues and escalates problems to the provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resources when necessary.
• Customer Service Excellence: Demonstrates high standards of care and excellence in all interactions with both internal and external customers.
• Skill Maintenance: Maintains clinical and administrative skills as per departmental competency guidelines to effectively meet patient care and daily operational demands.
• Patient Preparation: Escorts patients to examination rooms and prepares them for the physician’s visit.
• Travel & Flexibility: May travel to other facilities for providers or adjust work hours as directed by the practice manager to meet patient care needs.
• Environment Maintenance: Ensures a safe and supportive environment by keeping work areas, exam rooms, and equipment clean, orderly, and safe, ensuring supplies are available and equipment is functioning properly.
• Virtual Health Support: Assists patients and providers with virtual health visits, including setting up visits on appropriate platforms, pre-charting virtual visits, contacting patients for preparedness, troubleshooting technical issues, obtaining chief complaints, health maintenance checks, medication reviews, and other relevant patient details before the virtual visit.
• Documentation: Accurately and appropriately documents information in electronic medical records (EMR).
• In-Basket Management: Manages electronic health record (EHR) in-basket messages under the provider’s verbatim instructions.
• Front Desk Duties (as needed): May perform front desk workflows such as My Chart requests, patient registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out.
• Follow-Up & Collections: Follows up on orders, appointments, referrals, and follow-up visits, and collects co-pays as needed.
• Other Duties: Includes, but is not limited to, ordering supplies, tracking referrals, labs, and diagnostic tests, and disposing of contaminated supplies.

Qualifications:
• Licensing/Certification (Required):
• Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following:
• CMA (Certified Medical Assistant); American Association of Medical Assisting
• RMA (Registered Medical Assistant); American Medical Technologists
• CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant); National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
• NRCMA (Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant); National Association for Health Professionals
• NCMA (National Certified Medical Assistant); National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
• *Alternatively, if unable to obtain MA certification, an Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) is acceptable (not accepted in South Carolina).• • BLS (Basic Life Support), American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH).
• Education:
• High School/GED (required).
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program (preferred in all states except South Carolina).
• In South Carolina (completion of one of the below is required):
• An accredited Medical assistant post-secondary education program.
• A Career and technical education health sciences program approved by the South Carolina Department of Education.
• A medical assisting program provided by a branch of the United States military.
• A Medical assisting United States Department of Labor approved Registered Apprenticeship program.
• A Training program that is delivered, in whole or in part, by a healthcare employer that aligns to a nationally accredited certification exam.
• Work Experience:
• Completion of externship or clinical lab training (preferred).
• 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience (preferred).
• Skills:
• Record patients’ medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results in medical records.
• Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height.
• Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
• Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing.
• Provide authorized prescription and drug refill information for pharmacies as directed by the provider.
• Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians’ instructions to patients.
• Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
• Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
• Perform general office duties, such as answering telephones, taking dictation, or completing insurance forms.
• Successfully completes skills or competency checklists to be able to help physicians examine and treat patients, performing such tasks as handing them instruments, giving injections, removing sutures, changing dressings on wounds.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to collaboratively work with patients, families, and teams within a high-volume environment.
• Medical terminology.
• Attention to detail.
• Ability to multitask.
• Ability to use standard office equipment (i.e., computer, copier, phone, fax machine).
