Fall 2026 Intern – Platform Prototype Development | WD

The Tone:
This is a hands-on Mechanical Engineering internship at WD, a global company renowned for powering innovation and pushing technological boundaries in data storage. WD designs and develops an expansive portfolio of HDDs and platforms, acting as a key partner to high-growth organizations worldwide. This internship is critical for developing showcase prototypes that highlight next-generation intelligent storage platforms, directly contributing to WD’s mission of fueling a brighter, smarter future in the AI era.

The TL;DR

• Mission: Design and fabricate a custom transparent enclosure/display system that highlights key electronic and compute components used in advanced data center storage systems.
• Tech Stack: SolidWorks, CAD, 3D modeling tools

What You’ll Actually Do
• Prototype Design: Design a show display prototype enclosure, specifically a custom transparent system, for next-generation intelligent storage platforms.
• Design Translation: Collaborate closely with various engineering teams to translate complex production designs into compelling, showcase-ready, and demo-ready prototypes.
• Review & Validation: Participate actively in design reviews and prototype validation activities to ensure functionality and presentation quality.
• CAD Modeling: Create and modify intricate mechanical designs using SolidWorks and other 3D modeling tools.
• Fabrication Support: Support diverse prototype fabrication activities, encompassing drilling, routing, cutting, polishing, fastening, and final assembly processes.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline. This role is aligned with candidates at the early stages of their professional career, typically with 0-2+ years of relevant experience.
• Experience: Proven experience utilizing SolidWorks, CAD software, or similar 3D modeling tools for mechanical design and development. Practical experience with hands-on problem-solving in a lab or fabrication environment is essential.
• Skills: Strong mechanical aptitude, crucial for understanding and applying principles to design and fabrication. Demonstrated hands-on problem-solving abilities, particularly in prototype development scenarios. Effective communication and collaboration skills to work seamlessly with multidisciplinary engineering teams. A self-starter with a strong sense of initiative and eagerness for continuous learning in a technical environment.
• Bonus: Experience or familiarity with program management principles.
