Their current focus is on advancing technology to significantly increase tunneling speed and reduce costs by a factor of 10 or more. The ultimate goal is to enable the viability of Hyperloop adoption and facilitate rapid transit in densely populated areas.

Job Description: Mechanical Engineering Intern (Year Long)

This is a demanding and highly responsible internship position at The Boring Company, where interns are expected to take almost as much ownership of their projects as regular employees. The work environment is fast-paced, with everyone dedicated to the common goal of revolutionizing transportation.

Responsibilities

Design and Support: Either design or assist in the design of various systems and sub-systems critical to operations. This includes, but is not limited to:
• Boring machine parts
• Support systems and their associated equipment
• Tunnel segment production
• Passenger and construction vehicles
• Tunnel infrastructure
Design Methodology: Utilize a combination of sound judgment, manual calculations, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and CAD software to develop and effectively communicate designs.
Project Management: Adhere to project schedules and ensure that all tasks are completed promptly, from initial concept to final implementation.
Communication: Proactively communicate project schedules to stakeholders and other teams with dependent systems, immediately highlighting any changes or potential delays.
Holistic Perspective: Continuously evaluate how specific designs integrate into the broader operational system. Ensure that design decisions align with top-level operational needs and adequately consider future developments.
Compliance: Guarantee that all designed systems comply with relevant regulations, including MSHA, OSHA, NEC, NFPA, and Class 1 Division 2 Hazardous Location standards.

Basic Qualifications

• Possession of a High School diploma or GED.
• Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
• A minimum of 1 year of experience in design using SolidWorks.
• Demonstrated hands-on hardware experience in fabrication, assembly, and/or testing, gained through professional, academic, or recreational settings.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Basic proficiency in machine design principles.
• Knowledge across various engineering disciplines, including mechatronics, mechanism design, fluid power system concepts and design, dynamics, material selection, testing methods, and common machining and fabrication processes.
• Experience in creating manufacturing drawings.
• Prior internship experience is a plus.
• Participation in the “Not-a-Boring-Competition” is considered a positive asset.
• Strong teamwork abilities with a proven capacity to effectively interact and collaborate with other engineering disciplines.
• Exceptional attention to detail.
