About the Job Description

Job Title: Mechanical Engineering Intern (Year Long)

Role Overview:
The Mechanical Engineering Intern at The Boring Company will be given significant responsibility, almost equivalent to a regular employee. The company values ‘ownership’, expecting interns to take full ownership of their projects. This role operates in a fast-paced environment where all team members are working towards the common goal of revolutionizing transportation.

Responsibilities:
Design and Support: Responsibilities include designing or supporting the design of various systems and sub-systems critical to operations. This encompasses:
Boring machine parts.
Support systems and their associated equipment.
Tunnel segment production mechanisms.
Passenger and construction vehicles.
Tunnel infrastructure.
Design Tools and Methods: Competently utilize judgment, hand calculations, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and CAD (Computer-Aided Design) to develop and effectively communicate designs.
Project Management: Adhere strictly to project schedules, ensuring the timely completion of projects from their initial conception through to implementation.
Communication: Proactively communicate schedule updates to stakeholders and other teams with dependent systems, highlighting any changes as they occur.
System Integration: Continuously evaluate how designed systems fit into the broader operational picture, ensuring design choices align with top-level company needs and account for future developments.
Compliance: Ensure all systems are fully compliant with relevant regulations, including MSHA, OSHA, NEC, NFPA, and Class 1 Division 2 Hazardous Location standards.

Basic Qualifications:
Education: Must possess a High School diploma or GED and be currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
CAD Experience: At least 1 year of experience in design using SolidWorks.
Hands-on Experience: Proven hands-on hardware experience in fabrication, assembly, and/or testing. This experience can stem from professional, academic, or recreational settings.

Preferred Skills and Experience:
Machine Design: Basic proficiency in machine design.
Technical Knowledge: Knowledgeable in various engineering disciplines, including mechatronics, mechanism design, fluid power system concepts and design, dynamics, material selection, testing methods, and common machining and fabrication processes.
Manufacturing Drawings: Experience in creating manufacturing drawings.
Prior Experience: Previous internship experience or participation in the Not-a-Boring-Competition is considered a plus.
Teamwork: Possesses strong teamwork skills with a demonstrated ability to effectively interact and collaborate with other engineering disciplines.
Attention to Detail: Exhibits acute attention to detail.
