About the Mechanical Engineering Intern Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our team in Philadelphia, PA. This intern program is meticulously designed to immerse students in a broad understanding of all phases of ship design and engineering, providing invaluable hands-on experience within a dynamic and innovative environment.

Primary Responsibilities & Learning Objectives

As an intern, you will gain comprehensive knowledge and practical experience in:

  • Understanding the critical involvement of stakeholders, including clients and regulatory agencies, throughout the ship design process.
  • Learning about rigorous requirements trace, verification, and validation to ensure design integrity and compliance.
  • Experiencing the essential role of coordination between various engineering disciplines in integrated ship design.
  • Contributing to the production of high-quality engineering products, including adherence to strict configuration control protocols.
  • Assisting in the development of studies, detailed design calculations, and engineering drawings.
  • Recognizing the paramount importance of risk reduction in all stages of design and development.
  • Observing how cutting-edge technology is incorporated into design, from managing space, weight, and services reservations to coordinating concurrent designs with manufacturers.
  • Developing an acute awareness for cost-effective designs aimed at reducing manning through automation, meeting stringent pollution control legislative requirements, improving safety standards, and significantly reducing construction, operation, and maintenance costs.

Hands-On Experience

Interns will obtain direct practical experience by:

  • Working on real-world tasks, directly supporting experienced engineers within their primary area of interest.
  • Collaborating directly with engineers in other disciplines to foster interdisciplinary understanding and teamwork.
  • Depending on current workload, having the unique opportunity to work on various types of ships in different phases of design, as well as contributing to the development of alteration packages for ships already in service.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be pursuing a degree from an accredited college/university in Mechanical Engineering or a related field of study.
  • Must have the ability to work from our Philadelphia office up to 3 days a week.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Pay Range: $48,100.00 – $86,950.00
