Job Description: Mechanical Design Co-Op Intern

The Mechanical Design Co-Op Intern position at Daktronics offers a unique opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering challenges within the large-format electronic display industry. What the Work Looks Like:

As a Mechanical Design Co-Op Intern, you will be an integral part of product development teams and will:

Shadow an experienced Daktronics engineer, gaining insights into industry practices.
• Play an integrated role in product development teams, working on design challenges.
• Utilize critical problem-solving techniques to address design and development issues.
Create 3D CAD models and assemblies using Creo, along with supporting documentation.
• Gain hands-on design experience, which includes creating detailed designs, procuring necessary materials, and fabricating concepts or prototypes.
• Apply good design methodologies to layout design sets, evaluate pros and cons, and provide appropriate justifications for strong decision-making.
Design, coordinate, and interpret results from various engineering tests and experiments.
Apply classroom knowledge directly to real-world design problems.
Work and communicate effectively as a team member.
Regularly and reliably work the scheduled shift.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the Product Development department.

Work Schedule:

• Internships typically run for approximately 7 months, with two main periods:
• January 12, 2026 to August 07, 2026
• May 11, 2026 to December 11, 2026
• There is a possibility to adjust the schedule to fit your academic calendar.
• Candidates must be able to commit to 40 hours per week.
• This role requires interns to take a semester off from school to complete the internship, if applicable.
• The position works through the Cooperative Education Internship Program with accredited universities, requiring arrangements for academic credit with a Faculty Coordinator.

Location:

This opportunity is located in Brookings, South Dakota, and is open to candidates eligible to work in the U.S.

Pay and Perks:

• The typical hiring range for this position is $21.00 to $23.00 per hour. The actual offer will be based on factors such as relevant education, experience, location, and applicable local legislation.

Qualifications:

To be considered for the Mechanical Design Co-Op Intern position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Academic Requirements:
• Preferred applicants are full-time students of at least junior status currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Must be able to take a semester off from school to complete the internship, if applicable.
• Must be able to commit to 40 hours per week.
• Must work through the Cooperative Education Internship Program with an accredited university and Faculty Coordinator to arrange for credit.
• Only strong academic performers will be considered, with a preference for a 3.0 GPA or greater.
Unofficial transcripts or web transcripts must be submitted with the application.
Other Requirements:
• Possess good oral and written communication skills, good organizational skills, and self-motivation.
• Must be motivated and eager to learn industry concepts.
• Demonstrate dedication and a desire for quality performance.
• Possess good problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
• Have essential computer and keyboarding skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
Physical Requirements include:
• Ability to operate automated equipment and/or hand tools.
• Ability to work with some odors.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 45 lbs. and/or awkward items.
• Ability to stand for the full shift.
• Must be fluent in English, both written and verbal.
• Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.

• Familiarity with drafting and parametric modeling software, such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Creo.
