Job Description: DoD SkillBridge Internship – Master Trades Person 2-3 (ACCCIT)

This is an UNPAID internship opportunity for transitioning active-duty U.S. military personnel through the DoD SkillBridge Program. It’s designed for those in their final 180 days of active duty, offering real-world experience to aid in their transition to civilian employment.

Objective: The intern will train as a Master Trades Person 2-3 within HII-Mission Technologies, under the guidance of a designated HII supervisor. The goal is to learn the maintenance actions and duties required to support the Aircraft Carrier Climate Control Improvement Team (ACCCIT).

Training Focus: The intern will learn about the maintenance responsibilities related to recirc systems, supply systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas dampers, and unit heaters.

Desired End State: After four months, the intern will:

• Develop skills in troubleshooting, problem-solving, and recommending solutions for shipboard ventilation systems.
• Be able to complete repairs related to recirc systems, supply systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas dampers, and unit heaters.
• Gain a good understanding of the components, basic inspection, and overhaul processes of these ACCCIT systems.
• Become familiar with planning, scheduling, documenting findings, and repairing discrepancies in work packages.

Essential Job Responsibilities:
Training Location: Newport News Shipyard, VA

Training Plan (Weekly breakdown):

• Week 1: In-processing, ship familiarization.
• Week 2: Safety training, PPE requirements.
• Week 3: Basic assessment for discrepancy identification.
• Week 4: Tool familiarization.
• Week 5: Paperwork requirements and work package completion.
• Week 6: Component function and its effect on the ventilation systems
• Week 7: Review of historical problems and solutions.
• Week 8: Perform routine maintenance and repairs under supervision and document work.
• Week 9: Familiarization with problem reporting and repair procedures.
• Week 10: Rigging and testing of ventilation systems.
• Week 11: Interfacing with the shipyard, government representatives, and ship’s force.
• Week 12: Engage with HII PM and team for each of the ACCCIT systems performance and evaluation feedback.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Active-Duty Military ONLY within final 180 days of active-duty service.
• 4 years’ experience with mechanical tools and shipboard repairs.
• Secret security clearance eligibility.
