Acuity Brands Internship Program – Manufacturing Engineering Intern

Program Overview:
Are you a driven and talented individual eager to do your best work while developing into an impactful leader? The Acuity Brands Internship Program offers a transformative 10–12-week experience (May – August, 40 hours/week) designed to cultivate high-potential candidates into future leaders. This program provides hands-on experiences that strategically connect interns’ strengths and interests with critical business needs. Interns will not only make a significant impact through participation in key projects and transformative processes but also have invaluable opportunities to mentor and network with leaders throughout Acuity Brands.
The program is ideally suited for interns with one or two semesters remaining in their degree program, positioning them for consideration in Acuity’s Leadership Program immediately following the internship. The Leadership Program is a full-time, entry-level rotational program that empowers recent graduates to explore diverse areas within a functional discipline, fostering skill development, internal networking, and early career passion discovery.
Work Flexibility:
This position requires an Onsite presence in Winona, MN.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities:
While specific projects and activities may vary, interns can expect to engage in the following areas:
- Implement Lean manufacturing tools in assembly cells to improve productivity.
- Conduct 5S activities in cells: Establish 2-bin systems, label bins and bin locations, and define tool locations.
- Create shadow foam boards for tools as part of 5S initiatives.
- Upgrade cell layouts to enhance Point of Use (POU), establish one-piece flow, and reduce waste.
- Perform time studies to create/update Standard Work (SW) documentation and Critical to Quality (CTQ) parameters.
- Integrate traceability system capabilities into Smart EOL (end of line) testers.
- Execute space consolidation projects to optimize production space and increase production floor footprint for projected future business.
- Participate actively in Kaizen Events.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineers, providing support on productivity improvement projects.
- Receive training on the PDS process and provide support for New Product Introductions.
- Work with Manufacturing Engineers to create capacity plans for each area.
- Lead projects focused on OOB (out of box) quality claims reduction:
- Collect and analyze data from dashboards.
- Work with Manufacturing Engineers to develop impactful action plans (Root Cause Corrective Measures – RCCM) to address OOB quality claims.
- Measure and Analyze Internal Quality Issues.
Education:
- Minimum Education Required: Some College
- Preferred Education: Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
Experience & Qualifications:
In addition to pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university, qualified interns will possess:
- Relevant internship or project experience.
- A minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven problem-solving capabilities.
- Strong time management and prioritization skills.
- Experience leading teams or organizations.
Physical Requirements:
- Medium work/some lifting required/standing and walking for extended periods.
