Job Title: Manufacturing Engineer Intern
Position Overview
As a Manufacturing Engineering Intern, you will embark on a truly impactful journey, taking ownership of a high-visibility project central to our operational excellence. This role is designed for an aspiring engineer ready to make a tangible difference by optimizing department layouts and material flow. You will be at the forefront of conducting a comprehensive, end-to-end analysis of how materials enter, move through, and exit our production areas, with the explicit goal of eliminating waste, boosting efficiency, and laying the groundwork for sustainable future growth.
This is more than just an internship; it’s a hands-on opportunity to apply core engineering principles in a dynamic, real-world manufacturing setting. You will leverage your analytical skills to develop and deliver data-driven recommendations that will directly translate into improved operational efficiency, enhanced safety protocols, and optimized throughput. You’ll gain invaluable experience in a project leadership capacity, seeing your ideas evolve from analysis to implementation.
Key Responsibilities
- Current State Documentation & Future State Design: Meticulously document existing processes and department layouts (current state) and then innovate to develop significantly improved layout concepts. The primary objective is to minimize travel distances, reduce material handling efforts, and alleviate congestion within the workspace, adhering to Lean manufacturing principles.
- Labor Waste Reduction: Proactively identify and implement opportunities to reduce non-value-added labor waste. This will be achieved through intelligent layout redesigns and the strategic implementation of point-of-use material placement, ensuring tools and components are always within reach.
- Efficiency Through Flow Optimization: Critically analyze and shorten travel distances for materials and personnel. Your work will involve balancing work content across various manufacturing cells to significantly improve overall labor efficiency and flow.
- Streamlined Material Flow: Enhance both inbound and outbound material flow paths. This initiative aims to effectively remove material congestion, reduce waiting times, and ultimately shorten overall lead times for production.
- Enhanced Safety & Visibility: Design and implement clearer, well-defined aisles and flow lanes throughout the department. This critical improvement will not only boost operational efficiency but also significantly improve safety and visibility for all personnel, reducing workplace hazards.
- Maximized Space Utilization: Develop strategies and layouts that maximize the efficient utilization of existing square footage. The goal is to enable significant future volume growth without the need for additional facility expansion, demonstrating cost-effective scalability.
- Scalable & Documented Solutions: Deliver robust, scalable, and thoroughly documented layouts. These comprehensive documents will serve as critical resources for new employee onboarding, facilitate smooth transitions during future product mix changes, and support continuous improvement efforts.
- Data-Driven Validation & Reporting: Validate the tangible impacts of your proposed changes on key metrics such as labor efficiency, safety improvements, and overall throughput. You will present your findings using compelling data analysis and clear visual aids, effectively communicating your project’s value.
Qualifications
- Academic Pursuit: Actively pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering or Industrial Engineering. Preference will be given to incoming Juniors or Seniors who have a strong foundational understanding of process optimization, facility layout, and Lean methodologies.
- CAD Proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency and hands-on experience with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.) for creating, modifying, and analyzing engineering designs and facility layouts.
- Technological Acumen: Strong comfort and proven proficiency with a range of technology tools, including the full Microsoft365 suite (e.g., Excel for data analysis, PowerPoint for presentations, Word for documentation).
- Adaptability & Learning Agility: Possess a strong willingness to learn, adapt quickly to new manufacturing processes, equipment, and company-specific procedures in a fast-paced environment. A genuine curiosity and proactive approach to problem-solving are essential.
- Exceptional Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills are paramount. The ability to articulate complex ideas clearly, interact effectively with diverse team members, and present findings confidently to stakeholders across various departments is crucial.
- Analytical & Detail-Oriented Mindset: A strong attention to detail is required for accurate data collection and analysis. Coupled with an analytical mindset, this will enable you to identify root causes, interpret data, and formulate robust, evidence-based recommendations.
Internship Duration & Commitment
- Duration: May – August 2026
- Commitment: Full-time, 40 hours per week, with all work conducted in-office to ensure maximum immersion and collaboration.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
