Job Description: Maintenance Worker – Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT)

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)
- Highway System Maintenance:
- Fill roadway joints and cracks; patch potholes.
- Flag and direct traffic; set up signs, cones, arrow boards, and other traffic control devices to ensure safety.
- Load, unload, spread, and haul materials and supplies necessary for maintenance.
- Cut and clear brush; remove trash and debris from roadsides.
- Clean and clear ditches to maintain proper drainage.
- Facility and Equipment Maintenance:
- Repair and replace road signs and guardrails.
- Clean curbs and gutters.
- Paint buildings and equipment; service equipment and machinery as needed.
- Vehicle and Equipment Operation:
- Operate various vehicles to transport employees, equipment, machinery, and/or materials.
- Operate vehicles to warn oncoming traffic, plow snow, and spread ice control materials during adverse weather conditions.
- Mow right-of-way areas using tractor mowers and hand tools.
- Operate specialized equipment such as augers, trenchers, backhoes, forklifts, and various trucks (e.g., dump, aerial boom, bucket, and platform).
- Specialized Tasks (May Include):
- Repair bridge decks (full and partial) and drains; clean bridge bents/caps, often at heights on ladders or utilizing scaffolding.
- Install signs, including structural and large signs at overhead positions; inspect truss signs.
- Pour concrete sign footings; weld and cut steel sign posts.
- Repair and maintain breakaway and/or overlay signs.
Minimum Qualifications
To succeed in this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED/HiSET.
- Licensing:
- Valid Driver’s License.
- A passing grade on the written portion of the commercial driver’s license (CDL) exam is required prior to the hire date.
- Must pass the driving portion of the CDL exam with a tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions (Class B), and interstate status (either Excepted Interstate [EI] or Non-Excepted Interstate [NI]) within 60 days after being hired into this position.
- Assessments: Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.
Special Working Conditions
- Physical Demands: The job requires significant physical stamina and endurance, including the ability to move materials by hand, operate hand tools, and perform stationary flagging for extended periods.
- Environmental Exposure: This is an outdoor-based role involving exposure to various physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse environmental conditions. This includes the risk of physical injury from carrying out duties in heavy traffic areas, on or near heavy equipment or machinery, and with hazardous chemicals or materials.
- Work Schedule: The job may require overtime and nighttime work, especially during emergencies or specific project timelines.
- Seasonal Operations: Operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials is a required duty during winter weather conditions.
