Job Description:

Job Title: Machinist Intern

Purpose/Summary: The Machinist Intern position is designed to assist and learn the fundamental operation, installation, testing, and adjustment of various conventional or automatic machines used in manufacturing precision parts and components.

Core Duties and Responsibilities: Under direct supervision, the intern will:

• Operate and learn machining equipment to produce components according to written instructions.
• Change, set, and adjust precision tools as needed.
• Load and delete programs in the computer.
• Maintain specific tolerances and accurately perform dimensions.
• Assist in checking parts using specified gauges or furnished fixtures to ensure dimensions are maintained.
• Perform routine maintenance checks and report any machine malfunctions.
• Maintain a neat and orderly work area.
• Follow all applicable safety rules and precautions.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skill & Ability:
• Basic knowledge of or ability to learn the machinability of metals, with a good mechanical aptitude.
• Good math skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and blueprints.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Education/Experience:
• High School Diploma or equivalent, and
• One (1) year of relevant experience and/or training.

Work Environment:

• Exposure to moving mechanical parts, electrical equipment, acetone, alcohol, argon, braze alloys, nitrogen, hydrogen, oil-based lubricants, and cleaning solutions.
• Occasional exposure to moderate cold and extreme heat.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to average.

Physical Demands:

• Regular use of hands to finger, handle, or feel.
• Must be able to communicate verbally and have the ability to hear.
• Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and stoop or crouch.
• Occasionally required to sit.
• Regularly lift and/or move up to thirty (30) pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision.
