Financial Audit Intern—Local Government Audit, East TN | Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury

The Tone:
This is a 10-week paid educational and experiential learning internship with the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury, located in the East Tennessee Region. The Comptroller’s Office is a governmental entity responsible for auditing state and local government entities and participating in the financial and administrative management of state government. This role offers undergraduate students a chance to witness and participate in the audit operations of the office, building skills through assignment to active audits and audit-specific training. Interns contribute to the mission of making government work better by ensuring accountability and compliance.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Examine Records: Learn to examine and review records, reports, financial statements, and management practices for local government entities and other organizations receiving public funds.
• Evaluate Fairness: Have the opportunity to evaluate the fairness of financial statement presentation within audited entities.
• Evaluate Controls: Have the opportunity to evaluate the adequacy of internal controls.
• Evaluate Operations: Have the opportunity to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of an entity’s operations and systems.
• Evaluate Compliance: Have the opportunity to evaluate compliance with relevant laws, regulations, contracts, and grant agreements.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Undergraduate students who are rising juniors or seniors, or students enrolled in graduate accounting programs, with an interest in governmental auditing. Applicants must have successfully completed at least 6 credit hours of accounting coursework.
• Experience: Entry-level position for students seeking to apply classroom knowledge to meaningful audit work, requiring adaptability and a willingness to learn and grow.
• Skills: Strong critical thinking, interpersonal, verbal communication, organizational, and writing skills, with the ability to work effectively both individually and as part of a team.
• Bonus: Preference given to students who have completed intermediate or advanced accounting classes.
