Job Title: Line Mechanic Apprentice

Job Summary:

The Line Mechanic Apprentice, under the direct supervision of a journeyman Line Mechanic or Line Mechanic Foreman, participates in the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground power transmission and distribution lines. This role requires fulfilling the training and educational requirements of the City of Burbank’s Line Mechanic Apprenticeship Program and involves performing related work as required.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists journey-level Line Mechanics in overhead and underground construction and rigging.
  • Installs and maintains energized primary and low voltage systems, 34.5 KV lines, and street lighting systems.
  • Performs related ground work.
  • Keeps supplies and tools in proper order.
  • Operates power-driven equipment such as trucks, compressors, pole trailers, and skip loaders.
  • Completes after-hour classes and receives on-the-job instruction and training to progressively develop skills and work more independently.
  • May be required to perform duties involving the handling, cleanup, and disposal of hazardous materials.

Minimum Qualifications:

Employment Standards:

  • Ability to operate common tools in mechanical work.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn electrical work in the installation and maintenance of electrical facilities.
  • A strong desire to pursue a career as a Line Mechanic.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Comfortable working at heights.
  • Capacity to learn and employ safe work practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.

Education/Training:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent at the time of appointment.

Special Conditions & Requirements:

  • Employees in this classification who are required by applicable laws and regulations to have respiratory protection shall comply with the American National Standards Institute’s requirements on Practices for Respiratory Protection.

License & Certificates:

  • A valid California Class “C” driver’s license or equivalent at the time of appointment.
  • A valid California Class “A” driver’s license within 18 months of appointment.
