Job Description: Lifeguard/Swim Instructor

The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor reports to the Special Facilities Manager and Pool Managers. The primary responsibilities involve providing swim instruction and supervising swimmers in designated areas. This is an at-will position.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Following established swim lesson curriculum.
• Monitoring student progress and communicating with parents.
• Maintaining daily records of lessons and activities.
• Constant surveillance of swimmers to ensure safety.
• Enforcing all pool policies and procedures.
• Completing weekly in-service training.
• Assisting with maintaining pool deck cleanliness.
• Recognizing and preventing hazardous situations.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to swim 200 yards continuously using breaststroke or freestyle.
• Ability to tread water for two minutes without using arms or hands.
• Ability to perform a feet-first surface dive to retrieve a 10-pound brick from the bottom of a 12-foot pool.
• Excellent eyesight (close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception).
• Strong auditory skills (hearing, understanding, and distinguishing sounds).
• Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods.
• Ability to lift, push, move, or carry 50 pounds or more.
• Moderate exposure to chemicals (chlorine, cleaning solvents, etc.).
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Qualifications:

• Service-oriented, dependable, and responsible.
• Strong sense of safety and responsibility for children and adults.
• Previous experience interacting with children (preferred).
• Must be 15 years or older with reliable transportation.
• Confident swimmer comfortable in water for extended periods.
• Confident in instructing swimmers of all ages and abilities.
• Ability to focus with attention to detail.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Flexible schedule availability (mornings, weekends, holidays).
• Ellis and Associates Lifeguard certified (or willing to become certified within 30 days of hire).
• First Aid and CPR/AED certified (or willing to become certified within 30 days of hire).
• Proficient in MS Outlook or similar email system.
• Applicants under 16 will need a work permit.
• Expected availability for the entire pool season (May 24 – September 1, 2025), with a limit of one week of absence for pre-approved reasons.
