About The Athletic

About The Leon H. Carter Newsroom Internship
This 12-week internship program, running from May to August 2025, offers a remote or on-site (New York City) experience. Interns will be embedded on The Athletic’s Audience team, gaining exposure to all aspects of the newsroom. The program aims to attract and develop the next generation of sports media stars.
Interns will contribute to:
• Push Notifications: Learning to structure, target, and write push notifications for both local and league audiences.
• SEO: Gaining fundamental knowledge of SEO, including URL structure, headline optimization, breaking news moments, and planning opportunities.
• Social Media: Understanding different social platforms and their applications at The Athletic, writing social copy, prepping content, and reacting to live and breaking news.
• Programming: Learning about The Athletic’s custom and algorithmic homepage, as well as programming on NYT surfaces and promotional efforts.
• Reporting and Insights: Conducting detailed reporting on planned major events and breaking news stories to provide insights for the newsroom, identifying areas for improvement.
Requirements:
• Undergraduate students, ideally in their junior or senior year or graduating in Spring 2025.
• Ability to work 30-40 hours per week.
• Prior newsroom internship experience is a plus.
• Adaptability to fast-paced environments with changing priorities.
• Deep knowledge of and passion for sports.

• Include a portfolio showcasing at least 10 relevant samples demonstrating strong journalism skills.
