Legal Instrument Examiner (Case Processing) | Executive Office for Immigration Review
The Tone:
This is a full-time role at the Executive Office for Immigration Review. The Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) is responsible for adjudicating immigration cases, ensuring the fair and timely administration of immigration laws. This position is integral to supporting that mission by performing meticulous initial and continuing reviews of complex legal documents, assessing and correcting case files, and conducting necessary research. The Legal Instrument Examiner ensures that all appellate case files meet legal requirements and are complete before being forwarded to attorneys, thereby contributing to the fundamental fairness and efficiency of case processing.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Review: Perform initial and ongoing reviews of a wide range of complex legal documents.
• Assess: Evaluate and correct appellate case files for completeness, identify deficiencies, and ensure compliance with other legal requirements.
• Research: Conduct extensive searches of records, references, or historical material to gather necessary information before forwarding cases to attorneys.
• Analyze: Conduct legal and process analysis of patterns and trends to ascertain fundamental fairness in case processing procedures.
The Must-Haves
• Background: This position is at the GS-08/09 level and does not have an education qualification requirement.
• Experience:
• For the GS-08 level, applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks, full-time) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service (or comparable experience outside the Federal service). This experience must include performing 3 or more of the following duties: reviewing legal or administrative documents, case files, and supporting records to ensure compliance with policies and procedures; processing and maintaining case information in tracking systems to ensure accurate records and support timely case processing; organizing case files, legal records, and supporting documentation; and monitoring reports and case documentation to track deadlines, communicate case status, and support legal or administrative operations. Your resume must clearly demonstrate this experience.
• For the GS-09 level, applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks, full-time) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-08 level in the Federal service (or comparable experience outside the Federal service). This experience must include performing 2 or more of the following duties: examining and processing complex legal or administrative documents to verify accuracy, resolve documentation issues, and support the timely processing of cases; coordinating with attorneys and stakeholders to obtain information, clarify documentation, and support case preparation and resolution; and analyzing case information and maintaining case management databases to prepare reports, monitor case status, and support the effective management of legal or administrative matters.
