Legal Case Writer | City of New York
The Tone:
This is a full-time role at the Office of the District Attorney, Bronx County, located in Bronx, NY. The BXDA is a public office dedicated to ensuring public safety and striving for equal justice for the over 1.4 million members of the Bronx County community. This office prioritizes assisting crime victims while upholding fairness for defendants, seeking appropriate punishment, and recognizing when punitive measures do not serve justice. This role is essential for supporting the office’s mission by providing expert legal case writing, contributing to the high standards of legal representation within the community.

• Mission: To support the BXDA by accurately assessing facts, preparing legal affidavits, and managing case-related communications and evidence to further justice.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Witness Interviews & Inquiry Resolution: Interview law enforcement and civilian witnesses, and address inquiries regarding case status, procedural issues, and criminal charges.
• Affidavit Preparation: Analyze and assess factual scenarios, often without taking notes, to prepare legal affidavits.
• Evidence & Document Procurement: Obtain all necessary documents from NYPD and other agencies to aid in case assessment and discovery, including communicating for and preparing video/digital recordings like body cam video for discovery.
• Document Review & Editing: Review and edit Desk Appearance Tickets that have been prepared by DAT writers.
• General Unit Support: Assist with other unit tasks and perform all other duties as assigned to support the office’s operations.
The Must-Haves
• Background: A Juris Doctor Degree is required.
• Experience: Familiarity with general court procedures, services, and functions is preferred.
• Skills: Computer literacy, proficiency in typing, knowledge of Microsoft Office, excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to handle a high volume of cases effectively.
• Bonus: Ability to effectively and professionally communicate and interact with supervisors, colleagues, law enforcement, civilians, District Attorney, and court personnel, as well as other agencies; ability to work days, nights, and weekends; and the initiative to implement systems that ensure work is done both accurately and efficiently.
