Legal Assistant | Executive Office for Immigration Review

The Tone:
This is a Legal Assistant role within the Executive Office for Immigration Review, a federal agency dedicated to adjudicating immigration cases efficiently and fairly. The position provides essential technical legal and administrative support to appellate immigration judges, playing a critical part in the review of immigration and nationality cases and the processing of formal Board orders. This role ensures the accuracy and compliance of legal documents and case workflows, directly contributing to the agency’s mission of upholding immigration law.

The TL;DR

• Mission: To support appellate immigration judges in reviewing immigration and nationality cases and processing actions that result in formal Board orders.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Legal Support: Provide technical legal and administrative assistance to appellate immigration judges in reviewing cases and processing formal orders.
• Workflow Management: Coordinate, route, and monitor case assignments to maintain an orderly flow and identify cases requiring immediate attention.
• Case Review: Examine case records and critical data, research supporting documents, identify errors, and ensure compliance with legal requirements.
• Document Preparation: Proofread, format, and edit legal documents, opinions, correspondence, and orders for accurate citations, grammar, and style.
• File Management: Establish, organize, maintain, and close legal and administrative files in accordance with established records procedures.

The Must-Haves
• Background: This role requires an intermediate level of experience in legal or administrative support. There is no education qualification requirement for this position.
• Experience:
• For GS-08: At least one year (52 weeks, full-time) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service (or comparable experience outside Federal service), performing 3 or more of the following duties: reviewing legal or administrative case files for completeness using established procedures; updating case information in an automated case management system; maintaining legal files in accordance with records procedures; and proofreading routine legal documents for accuracy and proper format.
• For GS-09: At least one year (52 weeks, full-time) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-08 level in the Federal service (or comparable experience outside Federal service), performing 3 or more of the following duties: applying statutes, regulations, and precedents to determine whether case actions comply with regulatory requirements; researching regulations, precedents, and agency guidance to address procedural questions and process legal case actions; tracking priority legal cases and updating case status to support expedited review and timely processing; and providing case status and procedural information to attorneys, judges, staff, or other authorized parties.
• Skills: Automated case management system operation; legal document proofreading, formatting, and editing; legal records management; applying and researching statutes, regulations, and precedents; providing case status and procedural information.
