LEGAL ADVOCATES (FAMILY LAW AND IMMIGRATION) | National Legal Aid & Defender Association

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at National Legal Aid & Defender Association. Legal Advocates assist attorneys and provide crucial support to clients involved in survivor-based legal cases, primarily within family law or immigration teams at the Survivor Justice Center. This role is vital in helping individuals navigate complex legal systems, ensuring they receive necessary assistance and advocacy during challenging times. The work directly contributes to providing legal aid and justice for vulnerable populations.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Client Engagement: Conduct interviews and communicate case-related information to clients, law enforcement, and governmental agencies.
• Document Drafting: Prepare legal forms, notices, declarations, client correspondence, and memoranda under attorney supervision.
• Evidence & Filing Preparation: Organize and prepare client evidence for court proceedings and other legal filings.
• Legal Research & Translation: Perform legal research to support attorneys and translate documents between Spanish and English.
• Case Organization: Maintain organized digital client files and accurately calendar all deadlines and events.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Foundational understanding of legal processes relevant to family law or immigration cases.
• Experience: Demonstrated ability to assist attorneys with legal matters and provide support to clients.
• Skills: Proficient in drafting legal documents, conducting client interviews, performing legal research, and translating documents from Spanish to English (and vice versa).
• Skills: Strong organizational abilities for maintaining digital files and managing legal deadlines.
