Legal Secretary I | Mercury Insurance

What You’ll Actually Do
• Legal Document Preparation: Draft and prepare various legal documents and correspondence, including pleadings, subpoenas, answers, cross-complaints, and discovery, for filing with the Court.
• Calendar Management: Maintain attorney calendars by accurately recording court dates, appearances, and scheduling meetings, depositions, and appointments, resolving conflicts as needed.
• Record Keeping: Maintain and organize legal records, transcripts, documents, and evidence, ensuring proper classification and filing of correspondence and case activity.
• Communication & Coordination: Handle routine correspondence and inquiries with attorneys, clients, adjusters, and courts through written or telephone communications.
• Compliance & Timeliness: Coordinate legal services such as court reporting and delivery agencies, ensuring all work is prepared and timely submitted in accordance with court deadlines and rules.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Minimum High School diploma or GED, with basic knowledge of legal terminology, discovery, pleadings, and civil court deadlines.
• Experience: Basic knowledge regarding legal processes. Preferred: Minimum 1-2 years of insurance defense or civil litigation experience.
• Skills: Typing minimum 60 wpm; knowledge of legal terminology and legal document management (briefs, summonses, complaints, motions, pleadings, discovery); effective oral and written communication skills with correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation usage; ability to accurately calendar and manage conflicts across multiple calendars; proficient in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Bonus: Knowledge of federal and state court rules and e-filing procedures; familiarity with litigation management software systems; trial experience; ability to be flexible and act quickly on urgent matters.
