Law Clerk – 12-Month Term Limited (Pattern Civil Jury Instructions Committee) | Colorado Judicial Branch

The Tone:
This is a 12-month term-limited role at the Colorado Judicial Branch, with duties performed in-person in Colorado. The Colorado Judicial Branch is a statewide organization dedicated to providing equal access to justice, strengthening the rule of law, and ensuring public safety. This position is vital in supporting the Pattern Civil Jury Instructions Committee by providing essential legal research and assistance to judges and committee members. The role contributes directly to impartial and timely dispute resolution and the fair application of law across the state.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Legal Research: Research, study, and annotate laws, court decisions, and legal authorities to support various litigated matters.
• Document Analysis: Read and digest legal opinions, briefs, and motions, extracting pertinent points of law and fact.
• Legal Drafting: Prepare briefs, legal memoranda, and statements of issues, including suggestions or recommendations to the judge.
• Courtroom Support: Inspect courtroom conditions for orderliness and comfort, announce the entrance of the judge, and maintain courtroom decorum.
• Jury Management: Arrange for jurors’ food and lodging, ensure jury security, and prevent mistrials.

The Must-Haves
• Background: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, coupled with successful completion of two years at an accredited law school. This is an early career role focused on providing legal services and research.
• Experience: Concentration on delivering legal services for a district judge, which may include courtroom duties and responsibilities often associated with a bailiff.
• Skills: Legal research, legal writing, critical analysis of legal documents, ability to maintain order and decorum in a court setting, and effective jury management.
