Junior Software Engineer | Leidos

The Tone:
This is a full-time Junior Software Engineer role at Leidos, with the flexibility for telework but requiring weekly on-site work at one of the following locations: Morgantown WV, Orlando FL, Omaha NE, or Huntsville AL. Leidos is an industry and technology leader in the Defense Sector, serving government and commercial customers with smarter, more efficient digital and mission innovations. In this role, you will join a collaborative, product-focused engineering team to contribute to the design, development, testing, and delivery of software products. Your work will be critical in delivering high-quality solutions primarily written in Java, Rust, and JavaScript that directly meet user needs within an Agile development environment.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Software Development: Design, develop, and maintain software components and services using Java, Rust, and JavaScript.
• User Interface: Build and enhance user-facing features utilizing React technology.
• Agile Collaboration: Partner with a cross-functional Agile team, leveraging Jira for planning, tracking, and execution.
• Quality Assurance: Write and maintain automated unit, integration, and system tests to ensure software quality and reliability for backend and frontend systems.
• Development Practices: Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and sprint ceremonies, and support ongoing improvements to development practices.

The Must-Haves
• Background: US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance within 365 days of employment. Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or a Master’s degree, or additional professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. This position is for a Junior Software Engineer.
• Experience: A minimum of 2+ years of professional software development experience, or 1+ year with a Master’s degree. Demonstrated experience working in Agile/Scrum environments and familiarity with tools like Jira or similar for project management. Proven experience with automated testing frameworks and practices focused on test-driven or test-focused development.
• Skills: Proficiency in at least one of Java, Rust, or JavaScript, with a strong willingness to develop and work across both languages. Possesses strong problem-solving skills and keen attention to detail. Capable of working effectively as an integral part of a larger engineering team.
• Bonus: Holds an active Top Secret clearance. Experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines and continuous delivery practices. Exposure to cloud-based or distributed systems. Practical experience using or experimenting with AI-assisted development tools. Understanding of software usability and user-centered design principles.
