Security Clearance Requirement
Applicants must have the ability to obtain a SECRET Government Security Clearance. A TOP SECRET clearance may be required based on program classification requirements.
Employment is contingent upon the Government granting the applicant an active security clearance.
Non-U.S. citizens are not eligible for a personnel security clearance.
The clearance adjudication process involves an examination of a sufficient period of a person’s life to make an affirmative determination that the person is an acceptable security risk. Eligibility for access to classified information is predicated upon the individual meeting personnel security guidelines. The adjudication process is a careful weighing of a number of variables known as the whole-person concept.
Important Note on Marijuana Use:
Marijuana remains illegal under federal law as a Schedule I drug in the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). This means any use of marijuana is illegal under federal law, regardless of state and local government laws legalizing or decriminalizing its use. This applies to recreational marijuana use, medical marijuana use, as well as the use of cannabidiol (CBD) products.
Adherence to federal laws prohibiting marijuana use is evaluated in the security clearance process. The use of marijuana can raise security concerns about an individual’s reliability and trustworthiness to access classified information or hold a sensitive position. Prospective national security workforce employees should refrain from any future marijuana use upon initiation of the national security vetting process.
