The Tone:
This is a full-time role at a well-established Brooklyn nonprofit, located in Brooklyn, NY. This large, mission-driven organization, headquartered in Bushwick with over 500 employees, has provided over 50 years of community impact across housing, health, home care, and social services. The finance team operates within a complex, multi-funder environment with significant grant activity and direct agency relationships. This Junior Accountant position is crucial for managing grant invoicing, expenditure monitoring, financial reporting, and audit support, directly contributing to the organization’s financial integrity and ability to deliver vital services.

• Mission: Owns grant invoicing, expenditure monitoring, and financial reporting to ensure compliance and support the nonprofit’s operations within a multi-funder environment.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Grant Invoicing: Prepare accurate monthly and quarterly invoices and vouchers for assigned grants and contracts, maintaining a reporting schedule to track submissions and deadlines.
• Financial Compliance: Review all expenses to ensure strict compliance with funder guidelines, verifying reasonableness and allowability for externally funded programs.
• General Ledger Analysis: Conduct comprehensive general ledger reviews and analysis, preparing and posting journal entries as needed based on financial reviews.
• Financial Reporting & Reconciliation: Maintain and update budget-to-actual analysis templates, reconcile cash receipts and contributions, and monitor aged receivables, following up as needed.
• Audit & Contract Support: Coordinate with Payroll and AP to compile required financial data, prepare sub-contractor agreements and process monthly invoices, and support internal and external audits by maintaining audit-ready documentation.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting preferred; an Associate’s degree or equivalent with 1–2 years of relevant experience will be considered. Basic accounting knowledge and the ability to interpret general ledger data are essential for this early-career role.
• Experience: 1–2 years of accounting or billing experience is required. Experience in a nonprofit setting is a strong plus, and international experience is also accepted.
• Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office is critical. Candidates must demonstrate strong attention to detail, robust organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently, and strong written and verbal communication skills for effective collaboration across teams.
• Bonus: Familiarity with city and state agency funding processes (DEP, DOE, DOH, HRA, OASAS, etc.) is preferred, and experience with Yardi or similar financial systems is a plus.
