Job Description

Job Title: Journalism/Communication Internship – The Nation’s Health with the American Public Health Association (APHA)

Overview:

  • This is an unpaid internship for students seeking hands-on experience in a fast-paced journalism environment.
  • Interns will work with The Nation’s Health, a publication of the American Public Health Association (APHA).
  • Opportunities to report stories and assist with newsgathering, writing, and production.
  • Location: Washington, D.C. (US-based).
  • Hybrid or remote options are available.

Responsibilities:

  • Writing news stories for the monthly print issue and/or web version of the newspaper.
  • Developing story ideas.
  • Attending press conferences and congressional hearings.
  • Responsible for the newspaper’s weekly online news quiz.
  • Contributing to multiple storytelling platforms.
  • Gaining experience in newspaper production and distribution.
  • Assisting APHA’s Communications Department with news releases, news tracking, and public relations work.
  • Working with APHA’s social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube).
  • Contributing to APHA’s Get Ready campaign by writing blog posts and participating in group projects.
  • Expected to produce numerous articles, news quizzes, and a solid package of clips by the end of the internship.

Qualifications:

  • Open to qualified students for fall, spring, and summer internships, including combined journalism/communication internships during fall and spring semesters.
  • Experience with deadlines and Associated Press/journalism style is a plus.
  • Prior writing and reporting experience is a plus.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Internships are available year-round.
  • Duration: Three- to four-month period.
  • Work Requirement: Students must work a minimum of 28 hours a week to maximize their experience.
  • Credit: Unpaid, but credit is available.
