Jewelry Appraiser (Graduate Gemologist) – Full-Time
Borsheims, a luxury jewelry and gift retailer and proud member of the Berkshire Hathaway family, is seeking a full-time Jewelry Appraiser to join our team. This essential role is critical in delivering our Signature Service to every customer, helping them protect and celebrate life’s special moments.
The successful Jewelry Appraiser will provide best-in-class support to Borsheims’ customers by delivering accurate, professional jewelry and watch appraisals. This position requires a combination of strong gemological expertise and exceptional attention to detail to assess, identify, and establish values for a wide range of jewelry items. The ideal candidate will excel at communicating clearly with customers, sales associates, and insurance representatives, while maintaining a customer-first mindset that supports both external clients and internal teams.
Job Duties
- Prepare accurate and professional jewelry and watch appraisals.
- Identify, grade, and evaluate diamonds, gemstones, and metals.
- Determine values using established pricing guidelines and industry standards.
- Use gemological tools and testing equipment to assess items.
- Review documentation and verify merchandise for appraisal accuracy.
- Communicate appraisal details, timelines, and values with customers, sales teams, and insurance partners.
- Update and revise existing appraisals as needed.
- Maintain detailed records and appraisal documentation.
- Support internal teams with gemstone identification and appraisal-related questions.
- Follow all safety procedures related to tools, equipment, and materials.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Graduate Gemologist (G.G.) credential required.
- Previous jewelry appraisal or gemological experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of diamond and colored stone grading, metals, and valuation practices.
- Experience using gemological tools and testing equipment.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, professional documentation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with sales, shop, and customer service teams.
- Customer-focused mindset with the ability to explain appraisal information clearly.
Essential Job Functions
- Ability to work assigned schedule on a regular basis.
- Ability to communicate with customers, co-workers, and business contacts in a courteous and professional manner.
- Ability to see well enough to read small print, identify merchandise and judge clarity and color grade of diamonds and colored stones, and read a computer screen.
- Ability to hear and speak well enough to converse with others in person, via telephone and paging system.
- Ability to move about the store from department to department, get behind narrow counter areas, and bend down or reach up into drawers/shelves.
- Dexterity to write in small print, to hold on to and use all appraisal tools and gemological testing equipment and handle small jewelry items while grading.
- Stamina to sit for over eight hours and focus on small, detailed work.
- Ability to work in a shop environment (i.e., elevated noise, minor dust, etc.).
- Ability to work with ultraviolet fluorescence and refractive index liquid.

Schedule
- Regular weekly schedule.
- No late nights.
- Sundays off (except during the holiday season).
