Job Description: IRC Newcomer Youth Summer Academy Intern (Summer 2025)

Scope of Work: The IRC Newcomer Youth Summer Academy is a five-week intensive program for recently arrived refugee and asylee youth (ages 12-21) in Prince George’s County. The program addresses learning gaps in English, social-emotional learning, and school readiness through academic, creative arts, physical education, and social-emotional learning classes. Up to 100 students will participate.

Responsibilities: Interns will support all aspects of the Summer Academy, working closely with the youth department. Responsibilities include:

Recruitment: Assisting with student and volunteer recruitment.
Program Development & Implementation: Developing and implementing teaching content and curricula based on academic standards.
Teaching & Student Interaction: Interacting daily with students, building positive relationships, and encouraging academic success. Teaching classes within the program.
Logistics & Administration: Managing program logistics (setting up space, contacting participants, maintaining attendance records, administering surveys).
Curriculum Evaluation & Revision: Providing feedback on existing curriculum and assisting with revisions/expansions.
Community Engagement: Soliciting donations of services and/or goods from local companies and organizations.
Home Visits: Conducting home visits to enroll families.

Learning Objectives:

• Gain understanding of challenges faced by newcomer students integrating into U.S. schools.
• Develop curriculum development skills (defining learning objectives, developing effective teaching methods for diverse learners, implementing assessments).
• Gain experience working and teaching in global environments.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Access to personal vehicle.
• Availability to work at least 30 hours/week from June 9 to approximately August 22, 2025.
• Experience in education/youth development (summer camps, teaching, tutoring).
• Experience working with refugee and immigrant youth.
• Ability to take initiative, think creatively, and problem-solve.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• At least one day per week of in-person work required. In-person intern orientation on June 9th, 2024, from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM.

Additional Notes:

• The internship is unpaid, but interns may be eligible for a daily per diem ($15/day) for food and travel.
