Job Description:
This is a 6-month, full-time internship located in-person in New York City (with potential for adjustment based on candidate needs and UN requirements). The internship is with the Visitors Services Section (VSS) within the Outreach Division, Department of Global Communications. The VSS engages and educates the public worldwide to foster support for UN ideals and activities.
The intern will primarily assist in the management of the 2025 Reham Al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship (RAF) programme. RAF provides opportunities for young journalists from developing countries to gain in-depth experience covering the UN, including the General Assembly and meeting with UN experts.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Assisting the RAF Manager in managing the 2025 RAF programme.
• Managing RAF social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, and X):
• Developing and posting engaging content (text, images, videos, infographics).
• Interacting with followers and responding to comments and messages.
• Monitoring social media metrics and analyzing performance data.
• Contributing to reports assessing social media effectiveness.
• Assisting other VSS units with daily duties, including:
• Responding to visitor inquiries at the Public Inquiries (PIU) Counter.
• Supporting the “Teach the UN” initiative.
• Performing other assigned duties.
Qualifications:
• Enrollment in or completion of a graduate program (second university degree or equivalent) OR enrollment in or completion of the final year of a first university degree (minimum bachelor’s level).
• Previous employment/internship in a media outlet, preferably with experience in digital content creation, social media editing, fact-checking, or similar.
• Computer literacy in standard software (MS Word, MS Excel).
• Skills in creating content for and using social media (Facebook, Instagram, X).
• Skills in using design and task-management software (Canva, Trello, etc.).
• Demonstrated keen interest in the UN’s work and commitment to the UN Charter’s ideals.
• Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Fluency in English is required; knowledge of another UN language is advantageous.
The internship is unpaid; interns are responsible for their travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. The UN does not provide financial remuneration.
