Accounting and Claims Intern | Howden

The Tone:
This is an internship at Howden Re, located in Edina, MN. Howden Re is a global reinsurance broker and strategic advisor focused on innovation and analytics to deliver superior client service. This role is vital for supporting the North America reinsurance team, contributing to risk mitigation solutions, and assisting with crucial claims decision-making for current and prospective clients. You will gain hands-on experience doing real work that helps insurance companies protect their futures and the people they insure.

• Mission: Help insurance companies protect their futures and the people they insure by managing reinsurance claims from initial loss notice through to client fund reception.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Reinsurance Accounting: Perform all reinsurance accounting functions for selected client accounts and provide backup coverage for other accounts as needed.
• Claims Management: Receive initial loss notices, loss status updates, and proofs of loss from clients, then forward them to applicable reinsurers.
• Coverage Verification: Confirm coverage under treaty by reviewing contract wording for retention, limits, LAE treatment, loss reporting requirements, and loss attachment basis.
• Loss Calculation: Prepare and review loss calculations to ensure accuracy and compliance with contract terms.
• Transaction Processing & Tracking: Process claims transactions within the accounting and claims system, and diligently track the status of reinsurer settlements.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Actively pursuing a Bachelor’s degree (rising senior, graduating in December 2027 or by June 2028), ideally with a focus on accounting.
• Experience: A GPA of 3.0+.
• Skills: Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; clear communication of thoughts and ideas (both written and in person); ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously in a client service, deadline-driven environment; close attention to detail.
