Job Description
Software Engineering Intern – Embedded Platforms | Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies
The Tone:
This is a full-time internship at Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, located in Palo Alto, CA or Irvine, CA, running from September 21 to December 18. This joint venture between two automotive industry leaders is focused on defining the future of software-defined vehicles through advanced technology solutions for electric vehicles, covering everything from operating systems and zonal controllers to cloud and connectivity. Interns in this role are crucial for designing, implementing, and debugging the core software that powers vehicle electronics, directly contributing to the foundational stack for next-generation vehicle platforms and ensuring the successful verification and board bring-up of new systems.
The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Full-time, September 21 – December 18
• Location: In-person, Palo Alto, CA or Irvine, CA
• Mission: Design, implement, and debug core software running on Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and embedded Linux/RTOS environments for next-generation vehicle platforms.
• Tech Stack: C++, Python, Shell, Go, Linux, Android, RTOS, CAN, Ethernet, SPI, I2C
What You’ll Actually Do
• Develop: Design, develop, and deploy embedded software on Linux/Android and/or Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) for electronic hardware.
• Optimize: Contribute to the implementation and optimization of Hardware Abstraction Layers (HALs) to facilitate vehicle hardware interaction.
• Build: Design and build highly complex systems spanning multiple domains to improve functionality and user interaction within our vehicles.
• Collaborate: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Charging, Body Controls, and EE/Hardware teams, on software initiatives.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program at an accredited US university, actively pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related technical field, with the intent to return to school following the internship.
• Experience: Experience in embedded software development, including contributing to the software stack for verification and board bring-up efforts.
• Skills: Proficiency in C++, understanding of Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) fundamentals, familiarity with embedded Linux environments, and experience with interface protocols such as CAN, Ethernet, SPI, or I2C.
• Bonus: Experience with scripting languages (Python, Shell, Go), kernel-level development, automotive communication protocols, or automotive systems and applications.
