About Austin Water:

Austin Water is a division of the City of Austin, responsible for providing clean drinking water and wastewater services to the city. The Process Engineering Division within Austin Water supports the Operations program area and the water treatment plants. Their core functions include Regulatory Support, Operations Support, and Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Project Support.

Job Description: Intern – Process Engineering (Undergraduate, Graduate, or Post-Graduate)

Austin Water is seeking a civil, environmental, or chemical engineering student to join the Process Engineering Division’s Drinking Water Team for a summer internship. The internship is anticipated to start in early June and requires on-site work, including time at the downtown Austin office and/or water treatment plants. Typical hours are Monday-Friday, 7:00/7:30 am – 3:30/4:00 pm.

Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will perform various engineering and technical tasks to support the Process Engineering division. Examples of potential tasks include:

• Conducting filter tests/inspections as part of the Filter Monitoring and Assistance Program (FilterMAP).
• Assisting with monthly Operating Report (MOR) analysis and reviews.
• Assisting Process Engineers in summarizing/presenting monthly chemical and energy usage and water quality data.
• Reviewing calculations, specifications, drawings, and submittals for CIP projects.
• Assisting with chemical contract and inventory management, including calculations, chemical delivery communications, chemical testing and associated procedures, and projecting chemical usage.
• Participating in jar testing.
• Creating solids mass balances.

Minimum Qualifications: Vary depending on the level (Undergraduate, Graduate, or Post-Graduate) but generally include:

• Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
• Enrollment in an accredited college or university degree program (Undergraduate, Graduate, or Post-Graduate level as appropriate).
• Some advanced coursework related to the internship program.
• Completion of at least two years of undergraduate study and pursuit of a degree in Civil, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering or a similar engineering program for undergraduate applicants.
• Completion of at least one water treatment course (graduate or undergraduate level) is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Specific preferences may be indicated in the detailed job description for each level. The preferred field of study is Civil, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering.
