This is an Internship program structured over three years, designed to develop future foremen for Sargent Corporation. The job is temporary and offers a starting salary From $19.00 per hour. The typical work schedule involves 10-hour shifts.

Driver’s License (Required)
Willingness to travel: 100% (Preferred), as the work location is “On the road,” indicating project-based work.

This program is specifically geared towards CET, CMT, CE & ME program students seeking practical field skills and knowledge to complement their academic studies. The core philosophy is to teach the basics “from the ground up,” gradually increasing responsibility and workload as interns gain confidence. Interns have significant control over their experience level and responsibilities, which are directly tied to their motivation, effort, and attitude.

The ultimate goal of this 3-year internship is for the intern to be hired on as a 1st year Foreman, capable of running items from day one.

1ST YEAR INTERN

As a 1st Year Intern, you will begin learning the trade directly in the field. You will work alongside experienced field personnel and report to a single foreman. This year focuses on acquiring foundational knowledge, experience, and confidence through various manual labor tasks.

Responsibilities include:
• Functioning as a general craft person, learning to work safely, efficiently, and productively.
• Mastering the proper use of hand tools (shovels, rakes, brooms, hammers, tapes, rules).
• Learning the proper use of power equipment/tools.
• Understanding the proper use of layout equipment.
Actively participating in daily Safety Task Assessment meetings.
Supporting utility crews involved in installing water, sewer, and storm drains.
Supporting building excavation and backfill operations.
Supporting erosion control and maintenance crews.
Supporting survey/layout crews.

2ND YEAR INTERN

In the second year, interns continue working in the field but are given significantly more LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES and access to more technical work. You will be expected to assume more of a leadership role while continuing to perform craft person duties.

Responsibilities include:
Craft person (expected to assume more of a leadership role).
• Continuing general craft person duties with added responsibilities.
Mentoring and training 1st year interns and other labor force members.
• Working more closely with foremen to understand their role and assist with tasks.
Participating in planning and production analysis.
• Learning proper field book set up and use.
• Assisting more with Quality Control efforts.
• In-depth involvement in utility work.
Instrument set up and use.
• Working as a pipe layer.
• Understanding testing procedures.
• Enhanced involvement in building excavation and backfill.
• Helping manage layout, material quantification, and placement.
• Understanding and assisting with material testing.
Erosion Control and Maintenance: Being responsible for proper installation and maintenance.
Survey/layout (certain applications), including training on GPS.
CAD training/application.

3RD YEAR INTERN

By the third year, interns are expected to work with and lead other field personnel, beginning to assume more responsibilities typically associated with a FOREMAN TRAINEE. You will work more closely with a Foreman to learn their responsibilities and expectations, preparing for a full-time role.

Responsibilities include:
Foreman Trainee (expected to be a leader, manage small crews).
• Continuing to mentor and train 1st and 2nd year interns, as well as the broader labor force.
• Working with the Superintendent to help with item planning and implementation.
Researching item details using plans and specifications.
Participating in planning and production analysis.
Reviewing item master to determine production rates, budget, and costs.
• Creating and maintaining an organized field book.
• Using an iPad for daily diary notes, personnel/equipment time input, item quantities input, and item notes input.
Leading, managing, and motivating a small crew.
