Internship Program Overview:

The Brookings Internship Program offers a pre-professional learning experience with meaningful, practical work related to the intern’s field of study or career interest. Interns gain experience, develop skills, and engage in career exploration. Opportunities include attending meetings, think tank events, professional development workshops, and networking events.

Specific Internship Focus:

This internship focuses on Native American or Indigenous policy within Brookings Metro. The work assesses how federal, state, local, and philanthropic partners can enable Tribal sovereignty, support Tribal economic development, and enhance the well-being of Indigenous people. Interns contribute to projects assessing how changing patterns of federal and state investment are affecting Tribes and Native American communities. Responsibilities include assisting with research and writing, gathering information from literature, data sets, and practitioners, and incorporating findings into blog posts, reports, and briefs.

Eligibility:

• Junior or Senior undergraduate students
• Graduate students pursuing a master’s degree
• Interest in Native American or Indigenous policy
Hourly Rate: \$18.00
Hours: 20-30 hours per week during regular business hours (with some flexibility)
Location: Requires being located in the U.S. for the duration of the internship. Hybrid and/or remote work is permitted.
Restrictions: Work location cannot be in Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington.

Required Skills:

• Excellent research skills
• Excellent writing skills
• Experience with data management
• Experience with data visualization
• Proficiency in Excel
• Familiarity with R and ArcGIS or Datawrapper (preferred)

Additional Information:

• Successful completion of a background investigation is required.
• A cover letter and resume are required.
• The cover letter should highlight educational experience and skills and explain how the internship will contribute to professional goals. Address it to the Hiring Manager.
• If selected as a finalist, two letters of recommendation or professional references will be required.
