Job Description:

This is a 28-week full-time internship running from October 6, 2025 – April 17, 2026. The intern will gain a micro-to-macro view of web content, from creating individual stories and projects to identifying larger patterns and best practices for long-term preservation.

The internship is divided into two parts:

1. Editorial Graphics (October – January):

• The intern will work with the Editorial Graphics team on information graphics, data visualizations, and special story presentations.
• Responsibilities include designing and developing publication-quality graphics for the web, researching and visualizing data for reporting, and collaborating with reporters and editors.
• The intern can expect to hone their data visualization, coding, and reporting skills with mentorship from the team.
2. Web Archivist, Research, Archives & Data Strategy (RAD) (January – April):

• The intern will work on archiving 20+ years of NPR’s digital content.
• Responsibilities include planning and curation, identifying stakeholder needs, assessing the technical aspects of web content, evaluating materials, applying metadata, developing training materials for users, and presenting findings and recommendations.
• The intern will further develop their knowledge of interactive media audiovisual assets and contribute to NPR’s first web archive.

Key Responsibilities (General):

• All work is to be performed under the close supervision of the host teams.

Qualifications:

Education: Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship.
Skills:
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, be attentive to detail, and meet deadlines.
• Interest in growth and willingness to respond to professional feedback.
• Demonstrated experience making graphics and designing for the Web, including experience with front-end web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, D3) and designing responsively.
• Familiarity with digital preservation, archiving, and data management.
• Comfort with spreadsheets and data (CSV, JSON, etc.).
• Data analysis and back-end programming (Python or similar) skills a plus.

Work Location:

• Remote Permitted: This role is based out of the Washington, DC office, but the employee may work remotely from an NPR-approved location.

Schedule:

• 30-40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, during daytime working hours. Flexible schedule.

Compensation:

• Hourly Rate: $20.00 per hour.
