Summary

The Prime Information Service Division (ISD) Internship program at UNC Healthcare System offers exciting opportunities for collegiate students, recent graduates, and workforce re-entry candidates to explore diverse careers in Information Technology. This program provides hands-on experience, allowing interns to work alongside motivated and enthusiastic Healthcare System IT professionals. Participants will expand their knowledge base, build impressive resumes, and gain relevant course-related and career experience. Interns will be assigned tasks and projects determined by their respective teams and departments, including shadowing senior team members and taking on hands-on assignments.

We look forward to hosting six (6) candidates across the following Information Technology department areas:

Clinical Engineering (1 Position)

  • Work Type: Hybrid – Onsite/Remote position
  • Responsibilities:
    • Assist with a variety of functions to support the Clinical Engineering department in maintaining medical devices and their associated IT systems across the Healthcare system.
    • Tasks include learning about new clinical systems, creating documentation, and compiling data for equipment replacement planning.
    • Assist with implementing new technology, assessing and addressing cybersecurity risks in medical devices, and developing departmental processes.
    • This position will assist with all aspects of Clinical Engineering, including device integration with IT systems and managing the full lifecycle of medical devices.
  • Notes: This is a hybrid position with remote work flexibility, but may include travel to other sites to support hospitals and clinics. The intern will work under close supervision of a Clinical Engineering tech, as most work requires technical expertise and sometimes certifications; however, opportunities for autonomy will be provided.

Information Security Office (1 Position)

  • Work Type: Hybrid – Onsite/Remote position
  • Responsibilities:
    • Assist with a variety of functions to support the IT security department in the assessment and reporting of risk for systems deployed throughout the hospitals and data centers.
    • Tasks include learning about new systems, creating documentation, compiling data, creating reports, and assisting team members with various projects.
    • Utilize security tools to help with risk assessments.
  • Notes: This is a hybrid position with remote work flexibility, but may include travel to other sites. The intern will work under close supervision of an IT security analyst, as most work requires technical expertise; however, opportunities for autonomy will be provided.

Enterprise Analytics and Data Science (1 Position)

  • Work Type: Hybrid – Onsite/Remote position
  • Responsibilities:
    • Attend regular meetings for the data science team, data science platform, and EADS.
    • Assist with the expansion and streamlining of processes for the AI & Automation Advisory work group.
    • Demonstrate intermediate skills with R/Python and proficiency in commonly used packages like dplyr, data.table, ggplot2, tidyr in R, or NumPy, SciPy, Scikit-Learn, PyTorch in Python.
    • Work with the Data Science manager to ensure that the Data Science team’s assets meet Architectural/Visualization Standards.
    • Research and synthesize knowledge and information from various internal and external industry/domain sources to inform strategic and tactical planning.
    • Help explore new tools and packages to make medical notes’ natural language processing more efficient.

End User Support (1 Position)

  • Work Type: Onsite position in Chapel Hill, NC
  • Responsibilities:
    • Education and Assistance: Provides support to end users by learning and assisting with day-to-day IT tasks, troubleshooting basic hardware and software issues, and responding to user inquiries. Training will be provided as part of this short-term internship.
    • Asset Management: Assists in managing desktop peripheral inventory and supports asset management processes. Maintains accurate records for device updates or changes, including installations or relocations, to ensure the inventory system remains up to date.
    • System Support: Gains exposure to evaluating IT products for compatibility, usability, and operational flexibility. Assists with documenting and designing options to support integration with existing systems.
    • Hardware and Software Installation: Participates in the installation and configuration of hardware and software applications to meet end-user needs. Training will focus on developing skills in imaging, deployment, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Notes: This internship is designed to provide practical experience in IT support while fostering growth and hands-on learning. Interns will work under supervision and gradually take on responsibilities as they gain knowledge and confidence.

IT Networking (1 Position)

  • Work Type: Hybrid – Onsite Morrisville, NC – Remote
  • Responsibilities:
    • Provides connectivity between locations, to datacenters, to hosted and cloud-based enterprise applications, and the internet.
    • Assist network team with day-to-day tasks, including router/switch installation, patching network drops, documentation, IDF clean up, and UPS replacement as well as other necessary tasks.
  • Requirements: Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

ISD Computer Operations Technical Support (Triangle Area) (1 Position)

  • Work Type: Hybrid – Onsite/Remote
  • Responsibilities:
    • Assist with a variety of functions to advance the ISD Computer Operations Technical Support Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) initiative, which maintains reliable network backup power infrastructure across UNC Health facilities.
    • Gain exposure to DHCP on-line request tools; used to request Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol reservations and IP allocations as needed.
    • Work with department resources to explore the importance of requirements documentation regarding device details and wayfinding details of network closets.
  • Requirements: Must be able to lift 60 lbs.

  • Professional Experience Requirements: Prior education, training, and experience that provides the ability to perform the assigned tasks.
