Job Description: Industrial/Furniture Designer Intern (Design Within Reach)

This is a paid, 12-week summer internship at Design Within Reach, a MillerKnoll brand, based in Stamford, CT (with one flexible day per week in NYC). The intern will work 4 days a week in the office. The role focuses on assisting with the design of products across furniture, lighting, and textiles.

Key Responsibilities:

Research: Investigating innovative and sustainable materials, finishes, and mechanisms; consulting with partners across the MillerKnoll enterprise. Staying updated on market trends and researching archival designs to maintain brand authenticity.
Design: Developing new design concepts; creating visual communication through sketching and 3D/2D CAD drawings; producing high-quality digital renderings; creating physical prototypes; documenting technical details.
Collaboration: Working closely with internal teams (design, merchandising, product development) and external partners/manufacturers. Facilitating cross-functional communication, contributing creative thinking and technical expertise, and ensuring alignment with company ethos.
Mechanical Aptitude: Maintaining accurate and consistent technical specifications; producing technical drawings compliant with manufacturing standards and design guidelines. Streamlining workflows and improving processes to meet high design standards.
Industry Savvy: Maintaining awareness of industry standards in architecture, design, furniture, and consumer products; understanding macro and emerging trends to drive innovation.

Qualifications/Skills:

• Excellent 3D modeling skills (Fusion 360 or Blender preferred) and proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
• Exceptional visual communication skills (2D and 3D, digital and physical).
• Strong creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.
• Understanding of design principles, aesthetics, cultural trends, and design history.
• Positive and professional attitude; willingness to learn.
• Understanding of manufacturing and craft techniques (hands-on experience with sewing, woodworking, metalworking, ceramics, or other preferred).

Education/Experience:

• Currently pursuing a degree in Industrial Design or a related field (required).
• Experience working in cross-functional team environments.
• Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to investigate, analyze information, and make recommendations.
• Demonstrated growth potential and market research experience (preferred).
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 (overall or within program).
• Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Compensation:

The starting compensation range is $22.25 – $26.45 per hour. Additional compensation may include a geographic premium, annual discretionary incentive, and equity awards (subject to program rules). A full spectrum of benefits is also offered.
