About the Job: Histotechnician

The Histotechnician position at Anne Arundel Dermatology is a Part-time role, with a schedule of Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM/12:00 PM.

Job Summary:
Reporting directly to the Practice Manager, the Histotechnician is primarily responsible for adhering to the laboratory’s established procedures for specimen handling and processing, conducting test analyses, reporting results, and meticulously maintaining records of patient test results. The role also requires regularly informing the Manager and Physicians about work in progress and any potential issues.

Key Duties/Responsibilities:

Tissue Preparation and Slide Production:
• Precise and accurate accessioning of cases into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
• Dissection of skin and excisional specimens following institute grossing protocols to ensure accuracy and high quality.
• Expert embedding of tissue samples.
• Accurate cutting of tissue blocks.
• Performing H&E (Hematoxylin and Eosin) staining.
Special Stain Procedures:
• Operating the Special Stainer and ensuring all equipment is in proper working order to produce high-quality slides.
• Validating staining kits used in the Special Stains area.
• Validating Special Stain controls, and monitoring the maintenance of adequate control slides and blocks.
• Maintaining the quality control system specific to the Special Stains area.
Immunohistochemical (IHC) Procedures:
• Operating the IHC Stainer and ensuring all equipment is in proper working order for high-quality slide production.
• Validating all antibodies used in IHC staining.
• Validating IHC controls used during staining and monitoring the maintenance of adequate control slides and blocks.
• Maintaining the quality control system specific to the IHC area.
• Assisting with maintaining the inventory of all IHC antibodies and reagents.
• Other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
• Must be HT(ASCP) registered or eligible, OR a High School graduate with two (2) years of experience in a histology laboratory, specifically performing fixation, specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and reagent preparation.
• Requires 1-2 years of experience in the field of histotechnology.
Two years of special stain experience is preferred.
Required Skills/Abilities:
• Possess skills equivalent to those taught in an accredited Histotechnology program.
• If working in a Mohs lab, must be qualified as high complexity testing personnel under CLIA regulations.
• Basic knowledge and understanding of computers.
• Ability to read and comprehend written protocols, lab reference manuals, and memos.
• Capability to accurately manage large volumes of work.
• Effective interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements:
• Involves prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds at times.
