About the Job: Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) – Parks Rec and Leisure Studies
As a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) in the Parks Rec and Leisure Studies program, you will play a pivotal role in planning and facilitating our 1-credit, skills-based courses across various disciplines. This position is combined with the pursuit of a Master’s Degree in Parks, Recreation, Hospitality, and Tourism, with both 1-year and 2-year program options available. GTAs are recruited annually for open positions.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the instructor of record for four (4) one-credit skills courses each semester.
- Activity areas include, but are not limited to: Backpacking, Rock Climbing, Kayaking, Canoeing, Mountain Biking, Paddleboarding, and Caving.
- Create detailed lesson plans for specific course progressions.
- Manage a CANVAS page for each course, utilizing our learning management system.
- Deliver engaging lessons to classes of up to 10 undergraduate students.
- Facilitate a weekend skills development trip as an integral part of each course.
- Serve as support on additional weekend trips as needed.
- Assist in the management of our gear and inventory system.
Qualifications
- Wilderness First Responder Certification.
- Instructional experience in at least one of our core programming areas.
- Experience working with and planning for a broad range of abilities.
- Prior trip leading experience in a backcountry setting (preferred).
- Risk Management experience.
- Ability to instruct in ways that connect with diverse learning preferences.
- A Fun, Positive, and Engaging attitude! We’re outside doing cool things!!
