Job Title: Graduate Nurse / Newly Licensed RN – Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU) Internship Program

Job Summary:

This is an exceptional opportunity for a Graduate Nurse or Newly Licensed RN to embark on a career in specialized pediatric critical care. This 6-month internship program is designed to thoroughly prepare you for an RN position in the Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU) at Michigan Medicine. The program offers a comprehensive orientation that blends both classroom instruction and hands-on, precepted clinical experience, ensuring a robust foundation in this highly specialized field.

Program Details & Commitment:

  • Internship Duration: 6 months
  • Program Focus: Preparation for an RN role in the PCTU.
  • Orientation Structure: Combines essential classroom learning with practical, supervised clinical experience.
  • Post-Internship Commitment: A two-year commitment to the PCTU is required upon successful completion of the 6-month internship program.
  • Work Schedule (Post-Internship): Minimum of 36 hours per week. Shift assignment will be predominantly Nights, incorporating both 8 and 12-hour shifts.
  • Start Date: All selected candidates MUST be able to start on March 12, 2026.

About the Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU):

The PCTU at Michigan Medicine’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is a cutting-edge 20-bed tertiary care center serving patients from state, regional, national, and international referrals. We specialize in the medical and surgical care of infants, children, adolescents, and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease.

As a PCTU nurse, you will:

  • Provide exemplary nursing care within a philosophy of family-centered care, empowering families to actively participate in decision-making and the care of their children.
  • Operate in a technology-intensive environment, utilizing advanced equipment such as ECMO, CRRT, and VAD’s.
  • Perform complex physiologic patient assessments in a high-intensity setting, caring for high-acuity patients with rapidly changing statuses.
  • Care for patients undergoing the most progressive surgical and catheterization interventions.
  • Practice in close partnership with cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, and fellows, providing individual support and education to families and patients throughout their intensive care unit admission.

  • Hourly Range for Registered Nurses: $41.78 – $64.81 / hour
  • Shift Differentials:
    • Evening Shift: $3.00 / hour
    • Night Shift: $4.00 / hour
    • Day Shift Weekend: $2.90 / hour
    • Evening Shift Weekend: $5.90 / hour
    • Night Shift Weekend: $6.90 / hour
    • Charge Nurse: $1.00 / hour

Nursing Framework & Union Affiliation:

This UMPNC RN posting is initially listed as Nursing Framework LEVEL C. The actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and corresponding salary will be determined at the time of hire, ranging from Level A to Level F based on experience and qualifications.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union.

Required Qualifications:

To be considered for an interview, candidates MUST meet the following qualifications:

  • Start Date: MUST be able to start on March 12, 2026.
  • Education: Graduate Nurse or Newly Licensed RN who has not previously practiced as an RN. Applicant must have successfully completed an accredited BSN program.
  • NCLEX: Successful completion of the NCLEX must occur no later than 45 days from the individual start date.
  • PALS Certification: Required (or obtained within six (6) months of date of hire) or MUST be completed prior to the end of the probationary period.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Student nurse clinical experience in a PCTU.
  • Experience as an extern or ICU tech in a PCTU.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills.
  • Highly motivated and organized.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Takes initiative in seeking professional growth.
  • Demonstrates expertise in communication and problem-solving skills as evidenced by interviews, documentation, writing skills, and references.
  • Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Work Schedule & Location:

  • Hours per Week: 36
  • Shift/Hours/Days: Night shift, 8 & 12 hour shifts; Monday through Friday and rotating weekends.
  • Location: Mott Children’s Hospital – Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU).
  • Note: All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
