Job Summary: Graduate Nurse Internship Program

This is a 12-week internship program specifically designed to prepare a new Graduate Nurse for a Registered Nurse (RN) position on a general care pediatric unit. The orientation comprehensively combines structured educational sessions with hands-on, precepted bedside clinical experience.

A significant commitment is required for candidates hired through this internship: a two (2) year commitment with a minimum of 30 hours/week (0.75 FTR) following program completion. This internship is a collaborative effort, a joint venture between 12 West, 11 West, and 12 East. Unit selection will be finalized during the interview process. Education will be delivered in both group and unit-based settings, while precepted bedside experience will take place on the onboarding unit.

This posting is for a Graduate Nurse Internship position within pediatric general care units. The internship cohort is scheduled to have a start date to be determined in July, 2026. Flexibility will be available for hours, ranging from 32-40 hours per week.

Unit Descriptions:

  • 12 West Mott: A 32-bed pediatric medical-surgical unit caring for patients from infant to young adult. Primary services include orthopedic surgery, trauma, rehabilitation, nephrology, urology, kidney transplant, neurology, neurosurgery, and endocrinology. Up to 10 beds on the unit can be utilized for the care of stable pediatric patients requiring mechanical ventilation.
  • 11 West: A 32-bed unit that is an integral part of the Michigan Congenital Heart Center. This includes up to 12 moderate care beds for patients requiring closer monitoring and observation. We provide family-centered care to pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery patients ranging in age from newborn to young adult.
  • 12 East: A 32-bed Pediatric Acute Care Unit offering comprehensive care with a primary focus on gastrointestinal (GI), pulmonary, pediatric surgery, pediatric burn, and neonatal populations.   • Hourly range for Registered Nurses: $41.78-$64.81/hour

Shift Differentials:

  • Evening Shift Differential: $3.00/hour
  • Night Shift Differential: $4.00/hour
  • Day Shift Weekend Differential: $2.90/hour
  • Evening Shift Weekend Differential: $5.90/hour
  • Night Shift Weekend Differential: $6.90/hour
  • Charge Nurse Differential: $1.00/hour

Nursing Framework & Salary:

This UMPNC RN posting is listed as Nursing Framework LEVEL C. The actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at the time of hire. Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.

Internship candidates will have a 5% payrate deduction while in the Internship per the UMPNC contract.

Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position. Posting may be filled after the initial 5-day posting period.

Applicants who have left the UMPNC bargaining unit must include on their resume dates of past employment including months and years of service along with effort.

Positions less than 20 hours/week may be combined.

Required Qualifications*:

  • The candidate must be a Graduate Nurse or newly licensed in the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse.
  • The candidate must not have yet practiced as a Registered Nurse.
  • Successful completion of the NCLEX must occur prior to the start date of the nurse internship.
  • Applicants must be able to start at the identified start date in July, 2026.
  • This position requires standing/walking/positioning/pulling/lifting of heavy patients and objects for long periods of time.

Work Schedule & Location:

  • Shift: Nights or Evenings, up to 50% weekend requirement
  • Location: C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital
  • Must be able to start in July, 2026
  • Note: All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
