Job Summary

This is a 6-month internship program specifically designed to prepare new Graduate Nurses for an RN position within the challenging and rewarding Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU). The comprehensive orientation includes a combination of classroom instruction and precepted clinical experience.

Upon successful completion of the internship, a two-year commitment with a minimum of 36 hours/week to the PCTU is required. Shift assignments will primarily be Nights, consisting of both 8 and 12-hour shifts.

Important Start Date: These positions will have a mandatory start date of March 12, 2026.

Responsibilities*

The Pediatric Cardio-thoracic Intensive Care Unit (PCTU) is a 20-bed tertiary care center, serving patients referred from state, regional, national, and international locations. Our specialization lies in the medical and surgical care of infants, children, adolescents, and even adults presenting with congenital and acquired heart disease.

Our primary goal is the provision of exemplary nursing care, embracing a philosophy of family-centered care that empowers families to actively participate in the decision-making and care of their children.

PCTU nurses operate in a technology-intensive environment, utilizing advanced equipment such as ECMO, CRRT, and VAD’s. Key responsibilities include:
• Performing complex physiologic patient assessments in a high-intensity environment.
• Managing high acuity patients with rapidly changing statuses.
• Caring for patients undergoing the most progressive surgical and catheterization interventions.
• Practicing in close partnership with cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, and fellows.
• Providing individualized support and education to families and patients throughout their intensive care unit admission.

Hourly Range for Registered Nurses: $41.78 – $64.81/hour
Shift Differentials:
• Evening Shift: $3.00 / hour
• Night Shift: $4.00 / hour
• Day Shift Weekend: $2.90 / hour
• Evening Shift Weekend: $5.90 / hour
• Night Shift Weekend: $6.90 / hour
• Charge Nurse: $1.00 / hour

Nursing Framework Level

This UMPNC RN posting is initially listed as Nursing Framework LEVEL C. The actual Nursing Framework Level and salary will be determined at the time of hire. Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.

*Applicants who have left the UMPNC bargaining unit must include on their resume dates of past employment including months and years of service along with effort. Positions less than 20 hours/week may be combined.•

Required Qualifications*

NOTE: Required qualifications MUST be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for this position.

MUST be able to start on March 12, 2026.
Graduate Nurse or a Newly Licensed RN who has not yet practiced as an RN.
• Applicant MUST have successfully completed an accredited BSN.
Successful completion of the NCLEX must occur no later than 45 days from the individual start date.
PALS certification is required (or obtained within six (6) months of date of hire) OR MUST be completed prior to the end of the probationary period.
• A complete and accurate resume is REQUIRED for both internal and external applicants to be fully considered for this position.

• Student nurse clinical experience in a PCTU.
• Experience as an extern or ICU tech in a PCTU.

• Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Work Schedule

Hours per week: 36
Shift/Hours/Days: Night shift, with a combination of 8 & 12-hour shifts; working Monday through Friday and rotating weekends.
Location: Mott Children’s Hospital – Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU)
Note: All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
