About the Pediatric Cardio-thoracic Intensive Care Unit (PCTU) & Role

The Pediatric Cardio-thoracic Intensive Care Unit (PCTU) is a 20-bed tertiary care center, serving patients from state, regional, national, and international referrals. The PCTU specializes in the medical and surgical care of infants, children, adolescents, and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease.

Our primary goal is the provision of exemplary nursing care, embracing a philosophy of family-centered care that empowers families to actively participate in the decision-making and care of their children.

As a PCTU nurse, you will care for patients in a technology-intensive environment, utilizing advanced equipment such as ECMO, CRRT, and VAD’s. You will be required to perform complex physiologic patient assessments in a high-intensity environment for high-acuity patients with rapidly changing statuses. Our patients undergo the most progressive surgical and catheterization interventions.

Our nursing staff practices in close partnership with cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, and fellows, providing individual support and education to families and patients throughout their intensive care unit admission.

  • Hourly Range for Registered Nurses: $41.78 – $64.81/hour
  • Shift Differentials:
    • Evening Shift: $3.00 / hour
    • Night Shift: $4.00 / hour
    • Day Shift Weekend: $2.90 / hour
    • Evening Shift Weekend: $5.90 / hour
    • Night Shift Weekend: $6.90 / hour
    • Charge Nurse: $1.00 / hour

Salary & Nursing Framework Details

This UMPNC RN posting is listed as Nursing Framework LEVEL C. The actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at the time of hire. Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.

Required Qualifications

Candidates MUST meet all of the following qualifications to be interviewed and considered for this position:

  • MUST be able to start on March 12, 2026.
  • Must be a Graduate Nurse or Newly Licensed RN who has not previously practiced as an RN.
  • Applicant must have successfully completed an accredited BSN.
  • Successful completion of the NCLEX must occur no later than 45 days from the individual start date.
  • PALS certification is required (or within six (6) months of date of hire) or MUST be completed prior to the end of the probationary period.

  • Shift/Hours/Days: Night shift, 8 & 12-hour shifts; Monday through Friday and rotating weekends.
  • Location: Mott Children’s Hospital – Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU)
  • Floating: All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
